It differs for everyone... i was fine after about 2-3 tournaments. My brother is 3 years in and still gets debilitating nerves.

I referee and coach and forget that I am even competing, and treat every roll like it's a roll in the gym, and don't take it too seriously or put any extra pressure on myself.

I have horrible anxiety, I'm nervous and sick feeling for about a whole week before the tournament lol. Win or lose the feeling after the tournament is amazing and I'm always glad I went.

I get the sick feeling in my stomach if I start thinking about my matches and competing, so I just don't think about it.

That sucks, maybe go talk to a doc about an anxiolytic.

I've tried a few different things but it clouds my head up too much and feels really unnatural. I just put too much pressure on myself with everything. Nothing helps me relax better than jiu-jitsu so it evens out.

I got into Buddhism (because I agree with it, not because I'm an example of it) looking for something to help me cope with anxiety and depression (martial arts, diet, exercise, hobbies, all of that also to help).

I'm good enough at one or two meditations to where it is almost like an Opiate. When I need to calm the fuck down, I like to say one of the mantras they taught me. Regular meditation, calm abiding and compassion also help, not that I do them that much.

You probably dont know the difference between being nervous, having anxiety, and being anxious when it comes to competition.

If you have something on the line that means a lot to you, you will be nervous. This is usually bad

If you are scared of what might happen to you or feel your emotions will be destroyed if you lose, that is anxiety. This is very bad for competition.

If you have a weird feeling and you wish competition day would just hurry up and come because you keep thinking about how the matches will play out, stategy, and what your opponents will be like, that is being anxious. Until you have the confidence that you can beat every guy in your division, this will be there forever. Everyone has this and its completely normal. Just think: The way you are feeling now, every guy in the competition is feeling the same exact way OR WORSE.

Man I wish I could be like that. I get such terrible nerves still. And Iwrestled in HS too. Tried everything too.

MMA seems like it bothers me less though

I am competing in my 32nd tournament on Saturday, I have had 150 matches, so average between 4-5 matches per comp... So maybe sheer volume also helps.

Eh, I get the cloudy feeling too, but the benefits are worth it to me.

With everything I prolly have 40 plus.

Still MMA seems the least worst

When I first started competing I would get absolutely terrified every time I even thought about the tournament I was getting ready for. Over time I have learned to embrace my nerves and now I get more of a feeling of being anxious mixed with excitement. There have been times when I went into competition with little to no nerves and I didn't perform well. I really think that feeling some sort of anxiousness, nervousness, excitement or whatever you wanna call it before competing is a good thing. I've gotten to the point where I actually look forward to the entire process of competition, including all the feelings and emotions that come along with it, where as before I would often question why I was even putting myself through such an anxiety filled situation.

I have my first comp this Saturday, I was incredibly nervous up until tonight, but I feel very calm and confident now. Can't wait to see how that changes come match day :p

How does one afford to compete so much?!
