I thought Palelei got injured but I just read that the UFC pulled him and put Nelson in against Miocic to make 161's main card better.

Is it just me, or is that kinda bullshit? If anything, Raphael Assuncao should've been pulled from the Vaughan Lee fight to fight Wineland. It would give Assuncao more training time and a spot on the main card of a PPV and would've given Wineland a replacement fight.

I agree. I would have loved to see Wineland/Assuncao.

It's mind boggling that Assuncao is fighting Vaughan Lee. He just beat Easton convincingly on short notice after breaking his hand in the 1st round. Wineland vs Assuncao would be perfect and it would really establish Wineland/Assuncao as the #1 contender instead of "just another fight to keep Barao busy".

But this way they can pad the records of both Wineland and Assuncao, never have them fight each other and have 2 viable contenders for a belt, instead of people losing interest because x beat y so but z already beat x senseless so why do I want to see y fight x now?

Roy Nelson is a star and Assuncao isn't

This is a weird fight for Roy anyway. A win does literally nothing for him and a loss (i think Roy wins) will kill all his momentum. Much rather have seen him fight DC tbh.

I think this is the last fight on Roy's contract, so an impressive win puts him in a good position to negotiate a new deal.

And TS, Nelson vs Miocic doesnt wouldn't affect Wineland vs Assuncao had it been booked. There are still fights like Barry vs Jordan on the main card.

Why pad their records with irrelevant guys? Barao is only waiting for Cruz to get back. Assuncao/Wineland produces a legitimate contender right now for Barao so he's legitimately defending the interim title. He wins and as far as I'm aware Cruz is going through surgery/rehab and all that, so the UFC tentatively schedules Cruz vs Barao sometime in the relative future. Meanwhile the division works itself out. Roop and Alcantara have had success in their transition to BW, put them against guys like Vaughan Lee to bolster their resumes.

Yeah but Wineland was set to headline. Yes, it was for a title, but he's an exciting enough dude and has been making waves at BW since losing decisions to Faber and Benavidez. They bill it as a title eliminator and have Rashad (who for some reason is a big PPV draw) against Hendo who is a legend and had an amazing fight with Shogun, who is also on the card. Shogun is rematching Lil Nog, and their fight from Pride is considered to be one of the best fights EVER.

I don't think you need Roy Nelson to help sell that card. People will watch HW's regardless so they are in and of themselves a draw.

Disagree completely.

Roy's entire reputation is based on beating guys in the 11-30 range, just like Stipe.

If Roy only fought top 10 opponents, he'd have posted 3 straight losses and been out, long ago.

Opponents of Stipe's level are the foundation of his career. It's where the wins come from.

Well Miocic beat de Fries, Beltran, and del Rosario before losing to Struve, who Roy Nelson KO'd in under a minute. Resume/MMAth wise, Miocic is sort of a step down for Roy.

I thought Roy vs either Barnett or Hunt would be ideal.

Recent HW fights have proven that Roy is a better gatekeeper than Kongo, Gonzaga or Rothwell. So it makes sense for him to fight top 15-25 fighters.

Roy is better known and the favorite of every guy sitting on the couch wishing he could fight in mma.

Barnett would have been a great feather in Nelson's cap, to bad he's damaged goods after Mir destroys him.

Roy Vs Mir II or Roy Vs Hunt might work for his after beating Miocic

When they lost the Interim Bantamweight Title fight they needed an extra main card fight and with them already getting Roy Nelson ready as a backup in case Hunt wasn't able to fight at UFC 160 they got him an actual fight when Hunt got cleared to come into the U.S.

Yeah but then Palelei gets screwed. I guess it doesn't matter to the UFC since he isn't a bigger name dude.

Here's the explanation: Nobody cares about anyone below LW. Nobody even cares about the current LW champion. That's why these guys are always headlining TV cards and in this case the card is once again being propped up by Hendo and co.

The UFC wants to make fans happy and therefore make more money, they don't care about the few thousand people here on sherdog complaining about Renan Barao. Most of the fans there yelling "Die" have no idea who that guy is.

the real reason Roy Nelson took this fight is because its the last fight on his contract and he said after this he will get a new deal, he is gonna knock Miocic out cold in round 1 and he will get a new bumper deal.
