What's the best jiu jitsu instructional book out right now? My work schedule makes it impossible for me to train at a traditional school, so I need to go the book route for now. Thanks in advance.

  2. How much training have you had?
Saulo Ribiero Encyclopedia is really good.

    Check out Stephan Kesting too.
    Stephan covers more basics.

Jiu-Jitsu University Book by Saulo Ribeiro. I own it and was very happy with the purchase. It doesn't cover 5 million moves or anything like that. Saulo does a good job of explaining the details of some great ecapes, sweeps, subs that are practical and will use often.

I've got Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Technique & Theory and BJ Penn's instructional that offers a section on ground.

I wasn't too blown away by either. However, as weekend supplement to the gym I apply the moves from the Gracie book on my friends and I think it's helped thus far. Again, nothing really extraordinary about the book, but it does tach you new moves while being mentally accessible to newcomers.

Andre Galvao's new book is a good complement that teaches you how to train.
