Okay so everyone knows I've been training hard for the past few months and now my very first competition is coming up and I need advice.

Johnny Quo and I are having a body weight contest to see who can do the most 1/4 of the way partial pull-ups. Now my question is: should I train going halfway up or perhaps add some weight while doing my 1/4 of the way pull-ups?

Please help me, I've never won anything in my life.

Well, except a 45' tv from Sam's Club $1.00 raffle and that was before many people had large screen tvs. I would say back in 1995ish.

Oh and i guess i would do weighted pullups.

Why not do full rom pull-ups?

Full range pull-ups aren't good for MMA, when is the last time you saw someone pull themself over the cage??

i give a 1/4. boooooo!
that's as good as a ten. partials are just as good (if not better) than the real thing.

if you mean for functional strength, then i agree.

that's what I have learned.

this is comic gold. Once that dips post leaves the first page, everyone who missed it will be like WTF in this thread.

gold i say. GOLD.

anyone know dalton's law of partial pressure?

the total pressure of a gas is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of all the gases making up the sample...

so, if i fart in a box, then urban farts in a box, then jonnyquo farts in a box, the total pressure in the box would be the sum of all of the pressures of the farts combined...

What you are basically saying is that instead of weights fedorable should hang a fart box with approx. 3 farts in it for extra weight.

Fedorable, obviously you should just hang real heavy weight and do a 1/8 or 1/16 pullup since you are less likely to get hurt.

.

well, how do you approximate one whole fart? is one whole fart simply a fart to completion?

i ask because some might claim that a partial fart is heavier than a complete fart. as for application to our current model, it would be similar to say that 3 partial farts would weigh more inside of a box than 3 farts to completion.

obviously, that's absurd, but so is the argument that a partial military press, or partial squat, has a better carryover to athletic application than a press made with a full range of motion...

good idea, but where the hell are we going to find a box?

Is this a real question? I am still not sure. Probably not, but this could be a valid contest. Not sure how you would certify that someone wnet half or a quater of the way up.

If you are going to add weight, don't add much. I have found that adding a lot of weight didn't do much to increase my max reps. The reps got a lot easier and maybe I got a few more out, but for working up to a plus 85, it was not enough of a benefit.

You are right about the range of motion, diferent mucles come into play. I do not agree that quater pullups are more usefull for anything though. Seems absurd. When clinching or holding or throwing and grappling arts, that is a pretty full range of motion it seems to me.

To answer your question, if you are serious (which I suspect you are not), I think it would be more helpful to train the halfway ups rather than full or wegithed. This will isolate the part you want to emphasize without worrying about the mechanics that become involved near the top. But throw ina few full motions too. Concentrate on high numbers. Do ladders.
