After looking around the net for information about the styles of wrestling practiced by Native Americans, all I can find is that they existed. Anyone the the history and/or the rules? Any written accounts? Anything? Thanks for the help.

In many ways it was the direct ancestor -- and inspiration -- of today's berimbolo and 50/50 game.

Okichitaw has grappling, but it's weapons-based. It has disarms, throws, trips and locks but it's based around both you and your opponent having weapons (knife, tomahawk, clubs, rifles, et cetera). So, for example, your goal on the ground would be to pin your opponent while you can draw a knife (and prevent him from drawing his).

When I was like 10 years old my school took us on a field trip to a native american heritage festival and this guy wrestled an alligator...

It was pretty cool.

In all seriousness though, as I understand it, there are a lot of native american myths that deal with wrestling matches.

I don't doubt that. Wrestling is one of the oldest forms of combat in existence. I'd be more surprised if they didn't have some kind of wrestling, even if it's now dead.

Not hi jacking.

However if this sort of thing interests you, check out this link/address.

I'm Aboriginal Australian with a family that has several boxers in the family, including my Grandfather who was a pretty handy MW in the Airforce back in the day and a younger brother who was a pretty decent amateur and was trained by Lucky "Rocky" Gattilari, who made #15 in the world and Damien Hoopers uncle....if you don't know the names....look them up.

However my father tells me stories of him watching my great grandfather/his grandfather being a wrestler and taking guys down and putting in some ground and pound.......probably explains why I like my grappling, lol.

Just thought you might be interested.

They probably did have wrestling, they had a lot of very cool cultures before they were wiped out and their history basically removed.

Indian leg wrestling is more of a cowboy thing I think. I know we do it at branding time. Had a family friend die leg wrestling in a freak accident

Flipped weird landed on his neck and died. I hadn't been born yet, but there isn't a family meeting where the story isn't told.

I guess you can truly die from anything lol.

EDIT: I didn't mean to set such a somber tone. My dad is a Plains Indian archaeologist. I will call and ask him tomorrow if he knows anything about wrestling

I was wrong, according to my dad Indian Leg Wrestling is indeed Indian. They also used to do arm wrestling while standing. Nothing quite like modern wrestling.

Y'all made me open up a can of worms, he is going to call his tribal contacts. I will probably be learning about wrestling for the next decade.
