Name a champ that won a title by luck. Maybe in an era that hadn’t evolved or the perfect opponent but not a crazy upset like Matt Serra. I think Anthony Pettis was a perfect matchup To beat Benson Henderson and Gilbert Melendez big there were too many animals for him to hold on to his title. I knew that RDA woul demolish his ass.

Also Ronda I never thaought she was good but girls always tried to clinch her for some odd reason.

Bobby knuckles also didn’t have the skills and size to hold on to tha title. Everyone In the top ten is bigger And maybe more skilled that him.

    Dave Menne...

He beat Gil Castillo for the MW title before Bustamante brought legitimacy back to the belt. I'll give you a moment to Google Gil Castillo

I'd say based on recent history, Weidman's wins over Anderson look like they were the right match ups at the right time.

Teh Chris never really lived up to the hype from that.

Ronda wasn't lucky, she just wasn't as good as they were making her out to be. Glad Holly Holm didn't let her retire undefeated or we would still be hearing about how a bronze medalist in Judo is a once in a lifetime athlete.

    Jon Jones

The golden era of LHW were all out of their primes and the new crop wouldn't arrive until several years later.

Gil Castillo was a top 5 welterweight in the world at the time. Even though it was for the 185 belt, it’s not a bad win.

Speaking of 185, as much as I love him, the stars really aligned for Evan Tanner to win the belt after Bustamante vacated the title.

Everyone pretty much felt that the belt was going to go to Lindland, and the UFC was just waiting to give him the opportunity to fight for it.

Then Lindland gets Flash KOed by a very green David Terrell, and Tanner gets the opportunity to fight for a UFC title against a guy with like 5 wins in his career.

Perfect example. I never believed in him. I thought he was slow and gassed often. Even when he had the wrestling advantage I didn’t believe in him.

This is pretty legit. Jones is good absolutely but I feel he redefined what lhw was. Most opponents he fought can make middleweight and have a career at middleweight while jones himself could never do that. He arguably(very arguably) lost to gus and reyes who are probably his only opponents that couldnt make 185. When he faces guys his size hes a shell of what hes thought to be. if he didnt have such an outstanding size advantage I dont think he would even ever be champ. He was in the right place at the right time

True about Castillo, but considering what MW looked like at the time, that's not saying much.

    Agreed on Evan Tanner (RIP).

Why would you be lucky to win a title in an era that "hadn't evolved"? If mma 20 years from now is clearly at a higher level, would that make all the champs of today lucky?

Anyway, most of this thread seems to be about making ridiculous claims, it seems . I mean, now Jon Jones is lucky to have won a title? Shut up.
