Not necessarily a bad thing, at least in terms of competition success that is.
Being well rounded and versatile I think
demonstrates good virtues, in the sense of having the capability to achieve a certain feat. Chasing medals though depends on certain traits being applied in certain ways, which may be more contingent. A particular ruleset is a particular kind of test, and every test selects for something.
A consistent strategy for success you see used by many different athletes at high levels in many different combat sports is the 'golden hammer' principle; having a certain area you do better than anyone else in the business, and being better than anyone else in the business at funneling everything
into that area.
