Hey guys, haven't been on here in a bit but I'm always lurking. Just want to say I appreciate all the support I've gotten over the years from the community since white belt. I really appreciate it. Hope you guys enjoy the highlight of my first year at black belt. Hopefully next year we'll get the gold at the worlds, first male black belt world champion from f/12 haha (I think)

Edwin, as stupid as this sounds from someone a million levels below you, your game has come on leaps and bounds since I started watching you at blue/purple. You've been great to watch and I really wish you all the best.

Nice work. Thank you for sharing. I'll be rooting for you.

Great HL and was rooting for you at the Mundials this year. You had an incredible run and I think next year will close it out!

Ridiculous. Great highlight. Love that Edwin nails darces in the gi. Also like those estima locks from everywhere. Even in that final lepri match Edwin was going hard for the finish the whole time.

It's crazy to me that someone on your level would still take the time to comment here on Sherdog, haha. Good luck, man.

Congrats on all your success! Incredibly impressed to see what you've accomplished since blue belt. And you have had an incredible first year as a black belt, and made it look easy while doing it :)

Plus it seems to me that you have a very high submission rate, compared to a lot of other black belts. Looking forward to seeing your continued growth.

You did awesome this year bro!

Awesome job man!

Thanks man, I appreciate that. I really made that my goal, I feel like I used to be a 2 trick pony as a lower belt lol. So I really worked on making my game well rounded. I appreciate it.

Haha, always remember where you came from. Literally used to sit on this forum as a white belt in high school and just press refresh all day to read about new topics in jiujitsu lol. Thanks man.

Hey, no problem. That blows my mind, and makes me think that I have the potential to be far better than I am right now if I take shit seriously. How long have you been training for?

Awesome, looking forward to you beasting it next year too!

Edwin, thanks to your highlights I managed 7 flying triangles in competition already (5 of them finishes).

Step 1: become a 2 trick pony
Step 2: get black belt
Step 3: get good at jiu jitsu and smash.

I'm already 1/3 of the way there.

Not necessarily a bad thing, at least in terms of competition success that is.

Being well rounded and versatile I think demonstrates good virtues, in the sense of having the capability to achieve a certain feat. Chasing medals though depends on certain traits being applied in certain ways, which may be more contingent. A particular ruleset is a particular kind of test, and every test selects for something.

A consistent strategy for success you see used by many different athletes at high levels in many different combat sports is the 'golden hammer' principle; having a certain area you do better than anyone else in the business, and being better than anyone else in the business at funneling everything into that area.

Big dogs don't train to counter the big dog, they train to be the big dog.
