First of all, it's not "clowning". It's called baiting, and it's a legit tactic employed by high level counter strikers. It's also high risk, high reward - something that can make you look spectacular when you are able to pull it off, but like an idiot when it doesn't work.
Pay close attention to Anderson's feet in the gif below.
Notice how Chris is doing exactly what AS wanted - right after Chris throws the right, his chin is literally hanging there on a silver platter - that's what someone who is baiting is looking to capitalize on.
You will also notice that AS is standing with his feet parallel, limiting his trunk movement. Normally, AS would step one foot back in a staggered stance, which would allow him to bend at the waist and slip, allowing him to capitalize on Chris' overextension with a perfectly placed counter. It's something he's done time and time again, but he made a simple mistake.
I'm not saying that Weidman would've been KO'd, or AS would've even won, but Chris was walking right into it, and the fight might've gone very differently had AS not planted himself like that. Given all the variables of an mma fight, it's amazing that AS was able to employ this strategy for as long as he did.
