Myth of Luke's cardio

Sure Luke gets finish in forth round against Weidman, but Yoel also has 6 3rd round finishes. What is more apparent is that Luke walks with his hands down breathing heavy just halfway through the second round. He relies on his strength in grappling in later rounds, as his striking gets atrocious except for his kicks due his opponents slowing the pace, that is great, but most dudes he fought were white and not as explosive, so he got it easy to scramble with them with his strength. In Whittaker fight Yoel proved he can move fast and keep the distance even in later rounds, even after he exhausted himself with failed TD attempts.

He beat Tim Kennedy & Jacare over 5 rounds, and weidman in the 4th.
He's won every fight that's gone out of the first round, his cardio is good for middleweight

If it gets to the 4th and 5th round, Luke will definitely have the advantage

Wasteland
yeah and he was throwing some sick flashy kicks in those fights too and didn't seem to slow down, of course he was younger but yknow.

Luke doesn't have amazing cardio, but he for sure has better cardio than Romero.

If it gets that far, I expect Luke to win the 4th and 5th without too much trouble

Yoel will not be able to keep the pace up if the fight gets passed the second. Luke will start wearing him down with body kicks and yoel will gas even worse. He did last the full 5 against whitaker, but whitakker was injured and wasnt really hitting him with much shots and wasnt really putting the pressure on him in the late rounds so yoel managed to survive. Wont happen against luke he will get finished if he gasses.

Whittaker fought Yoel literally with one leg, his knee was jacked coming into the fight and in the first round it got completely screwed and still whooped Yoel, plus who said Luke had cardio issues I have never seen that except in the Weidman fight when he was on antibiotics. Those things dry you out and drain all of your energy until you can get off of them. Luke is going to take Yoel to the 4th then drown him. Father time is not on Yoel's side wait and see

Let me guess you have better cardio right to? Haha

I think what your getting at is that his striking is very weak at the elite level.

To me that's as apparent from the first round as it is mid way through the second (hence the first round KO against Bisping).

His cardio on the other hand is strong.

Wasn't rockhold sick during the Weidman fight?

many fans think Yoel couldn't possibly have good gas. but his string of 3rd round wins should have dispelled that myth long ago.

Yoel paces himself better than any fighter, ever. IMO. even bettter than Lawler. it almost lost him the fight against Jacare.

Luke seemed to pace himself a bit in the 2nd round against Weidman. he gave a reason why he had low energy for that fight (some call it an excuse), but when he needed the energy, he had it in spades.

so far as i can remember, that's the only time Luke showed any propensity to gas.
~~~
conclusion: IMO gas won't be a factor in this fight.
Yoel accepts losing rounds, to save gas. in the grand balance of things, it's a good trade off for his power. but he always saves energy by pacing himself. his gas shouldn't be a problem.
Luke only showed a propensity to gas in one fight. his gas shouldn't be a problem.
I always thought Luke has very good cardio when you take into acount how many powerkicks he throws. That takes energy and he keeps them up to the 5th round.
What he never will learn at this point is even basic striking defense. Imo he is just to fixated on being flashy with his strikes and doing slips that dont work without securing his chin and while going back in straight lines.
His style would work perfect with a strong tight high guard from were he shoots his kicks and a 1-2 + check hook. But well like this Romero has his chance in the first rounds to get a finish.
Luke with the ability from GSP to include new inputs unbiased like a professional boxing coaches advice would be in talks for GOAT MW.
"but most dudes he fought were white and not as explosive"
TS just snuck that right in there.
Branch, Jacare, Lyoto, Phillouppo...
And yes, Vitor KO'ed him, but I think that was more TRT than being non-white. Or, all TRT.
And I don't think fighting an "explosive/non-white" fighters is a detriment to his cardio. If anything it suggests the opposite - they would conserve their energy as opposed to grinding him out/grappling/wrestling and tiring him in the later rounds.
Are you kidding me? Phillouppo is hardly a journeyman, Branch is old, not that good, and isn't know for being explosive. Lyoto has explosive, but not strong, just look at his body when he fought rockhold, lack of proper tight muscle mass and fast twitch muscles was apparent. Jacare is a decent opponent, but he is stylistically much like Luke, uses his strength to drown their opponents with powerful grappling, feet planted on the ground.
The only physically explosive guy he fought was Weidman. But as we saw in the Moose fight, post USADA Weidman gasses tremendously himself, can't keep the pace.
The easiest way of put it is: Rockhold has slow consistent strength, Yoel has agile explosive strength.
I think Luke Thomas has ok cardio. I wouldnt say amazing but the fact he can talk 5 hours to a computer screen is impressive.
