Ok my shots suck. I get them stuffed every single time!
What should I do to counter when someone sprawls on me? Is it over for me or is there something i can do?
Any tips on how to successfully get a single or double would be much appreciated and any help on countering just in case i do get my shots stuffed would also be appreciated;:D

pick 2 or 3 set ups for a single leg and drill them up the ass. pick 2 set ups for the double and drill them with a partner. have a 2 pronged attack when setting up the shot and you will do better than just shooting over and over. and switch singles into doubles and vice versa. all about mixing it up and putting the practice in with the set ups.

ok my shots suck too so take this for what its worth

my instructor always emphazises the need to set up the shots properly

for example, you can do this by switching levels up and down, and then shooting when the opponent is switching up. you can also do things like post on him, or snap his head down and then shoot when he comes up, or a million other setups

long story short, take wrestling classes

EDIT: i'm assuming you are bjj, if not please disregard

practice the sit through technique. Basically I expect my shots to be stuffed and sprawled on. You have to commit to the take down with everything you have, but when it goes sour sit through

Ok I will let you know the secret of wrestlers who land shots. Its not the first shot, its the second shot that takes people down.

Also shots should not be going straight forward they are easy to stop. you need to work angles when shooting.

Just like in boxing where a jab breaks defense for a cross to make the damage, a shot is supposed to make them sprawl or get out of position while the second shot takes them down.

The biggest mistake most people make while shooting is second guessing themselves, and stopping right when someone sprawls. Next time you're going to shoot on someone, don't second guess yourself. Try and shoot right through them and keep moving. If they sprawl keep moving through them until they completely stop you. I've noticed most BJJ guys are so used to the other guy just stopping after they sprawl that you can still take them down after they're sprawled. If they completely stuff you, do what the guy above me said. Switch to something else. Keep the pressure on and don't let them get comfortable.

I'm not shooter myself.

I tend to try and mixed judo throws and shots...if that makes sense.

I'll try one style and then the other, because most people lean towards just one style...

Exactly right! :)

You aren't going to get a good wrestler down with your first shot. It's always shoot, reshoot.

I wrestled for 8 years and my straight shots still suck... if you can't get it better with LOTS of practice I would say switch to another form of lower body takedown, like a duck under or fireman's carry or ankle pick.

If none of those work... uh, pull guard?

good set ups, don't shoot from far away (too many people do this), proper angles, shoot through the person, if it gets stuffed then re-shoot. outwork your opponent. practice more. don't be a pansy

You wrestled for 8 years and still cannot land a single or double leg ?

If shooting in for a single or double leg takedown is a problem then don't shoot. If you are aiming at leg attacks lock up with your opponant, then go for it. Tie up his hands so he cannot shoot in on you and grab your legs. Let me give you an example.

It's sparring time at my no gi BJJ class. I square off against an opponant. I grab his wrists and pull him into me, then I let go of his right wrist with my left hand and get an underhook.SO now I have an underhook with my left arm, my head is in the pocket ( in the right side of his head so he cannot turn into me) and I still have wrist control with my right hand on his left hand. Use your underhook side to swing him towards you then lower your level and use and outside penetration step behind him. Grab his legs behind the knee with both hands and keep your head and kneck pressed into his armpit. Now you have a single leg and can finish it how you want. Drive and go for a double or just yank up his leg and kick out his supporting leg. Go to the ground and continue.

If shooting for a leg attack is a problem lock up with your opponant first. There is no shame in this. Everyone likes to shoot for leg attacks. It looks cool and it's a good way to impress everyone. But don't be fooled by the YouTube vdeo's. Those that are good at it make it look easy and there is more to it than most realise.

The top 5 mistakes I see BJJers make.

1. They try to shoot outside the bubble. Don't try the shot unless you are "jab range"

2. They shoot straight on. That's easy to stop. Step to an angle and try the shot from the side, OR shoot when they are sidestepping.

3. Don't open your elbows! My pet peeve. Noobs tend to open their arms like they are doing a football tackle (they look like chickens flapping their wings) That is like announcing your shot with a bell. When I am doing the shot I try to keep my upperbody as still as possible.

4. Shoot through them. A lot of guys get the penetration, the opponent sprawls, and the shooter balls into turtle position. Imagine you are trying to tackle someone behind your opponent. I can't stress that enough.

5. Re shoot. A lot of people are lazy or late with their sprawl. If the first shot is unsucssful, pivot to your opponents side (while on your knees) and shoot again (with the same intensity). If you have your arms and head in the right place your opponent will fall unless he is using his hips properly to sprawl and most people don't. If your opponent does sprawl properly he's just opened him up to a sit out.

These tips help assuming you are doing other things right like "changing levels", "penetrating" "snap downs/distractions" Even than, if you are not going against a guy knowledgable in takedowns, simply driving forward and not giving up will take a bunch of people down.

Nothing pisses me off more than watching a non wrestler doing a sloppy shot. Especially when they are fresh.

practice a couple of shots that work for you best, dont rely on just one but try different ones and drill the ones you feel are working better

I ahve quite a good shot. I will let you in on what helps me.

Firstly ofcourse you need a good set up. I like to bully my opponents with snaps before i go for a shot... Iranian style.

Then i almost never go for doubles they are quite easy to counter unless you're good with them.
Get your foot work and technique right. This is very important.

Then you must rememebr just because someone counters you it means nothing, that is when the fight begins.
I always get inexperienced guys with that, they will sprawl on me and expect me to go limp and give up, but as long as i have a grip on your leg... i am either gonna try and get the takedown or try and get out.

Also its good to develop your speed and strength. I have a very quick single and it has helped me so much.

Then if that all fails shoot for a head on the inside single and then their sprawl will help youfinish your takedown.

Plus One

i can take horrible shots on bjj guys and still finish lol... even on purples and brown, but they end up owning me after i take them down anyways
