This thread might come off as @Clippy -esque but I thought I wouldn’t let that stop me from making it anyway. My pet newt, Newton, has gone to the great pet store in the sky.
I had him over nine years if you can believe it. I bought him Sunday, January 18, 2009 from a little pet store in kind of run down, slumy mall in town. I know the precise date because it was the day after UFC 93 (Hendo vs Franklin, Shogun vs Coleman 2). I have no idea how old he was when I got him, because they’re not typically bred, and they’re sold as adults. Those that are sold as pets are usually captured in the wild.
Specifically he was a Chinese Firebelly Newt, meaning he travelled a long way before becoming my pet.
I know a lot of people will probably say “so what?” and that’s fine. I’m just a very sentimental kind of person, and he was my first ever pet, so it does mean something to me. I wouldn’t say I’m sad about it per se, but perhaps a little wistful.
I hope he had an ok life in my care. At least he did get to bang one out at least once and become a father. I have another newt, Darwin, which turned out to be a female. Below is a picture of them together, with Newton slightly behind the fake tree roots and Darwin up front.
They had babies one time in October 2011. I managed to raise 3 of their tadpoles all the way to the juvenile life stage (where they basically look like adult newts but are only like a half an inch long) but none of them survived to full adulthood unfortunately. But as Beavis and Butthead would say, at least Newton got to score at least once, and isn’t that what life’s all about?
