When I'm working out, I only breathe through my nose.

After a while, before I even start getting tired, my nose starts to get really "sensitive" and feels like its on fire every time I inhale. I use Vaseline in my nose too.

I figure this might be normal, and that I should just ignore it and keep going, but it doesn't hurt to ask if anyone else has anything to say about it.

Well damn. I didn't even suspect that one.

EDIT: I'm already planning to see a doctor for my case of shin splints and hip pains, so I'll just throw in this question during then too.

I just assumed it was normal, because I've had the sensation all my life, just when I work out its noticeably stronger. If I sit here and just breathe in through my nose strongly, I can feel it.

Probably a minor sinus infection. Maybe go to the doctor and get some antibiotics or just try taking some Nyquil or some type of sinus/flu medicine it may help... then again... I'm not a doctor but thats my guess at least.

Lay off the class A's mate. You'll be reet

do you clear your nose completely when you blow it? if you have no mucas in your nose it will sting badly, i have had the same problem before.

Yeah I clear my nose completely. Should I not clear my nose completely? I'll have snot dripping out like nobodies business if I don't, and then I can't breathe through my nose like normal.

Stop the vaseline. Try over the counter saline nasal spray 2-3x/day and see if that helps in the mean time before getting it looked at.
You may have a sinus tract infection, allergic rhinitis, or a septal deviation from wrestling/mma training, or you have something else; all of which will need to be looked at by your family doc or by an ENT doc. They would all be fine with you trying saline spray in the mean time though.

Hmm, learn something new every day.

I always thought vaseline was a good idea, and in sparring because it helps with bloody noses. What's the general rule for vaseline?

I'll try the saline.

Should I clear out my nose when I work out?

I'm not sure if putting petroleum jelly in your nose is a good idea or not, I have never done this. I did a quick search on mayoclinic.com and found that there are some rare cases of people inhaling some of the jelly during workout and getting it into their lungs, but I'd assume they applied too much. I would probably stick to the saline nasal sprays. I know that these are safe to use to lubricate your nasal passages and your sinus tract.

Assuming your nose isn't broken, blowing your nose isn't a bad idea. If everything checks out normal at your doctors office, they may need to do allergy testing on you and may even start you on a nasal steroid (e.g. nasonex, veramyst, etc.) I would probably make an appointment with an ENT - ear nose and throat doctor to have it looked at.

I'm an ER resident in the hospital so I have some knowledge with these things, but definitely not nearly as much as the specialists, which is why I would probably see one of them.

Hope this helps.

Probably a sinus infection. Take some antihistamine-based decongestants for relief. Some people swear by nasal irrigation (somehow getting salt water up your nose). A lot of doctors give antibiotics but some say they don't have any effect.

What the hell is this thread? What do you mean by "working out"? Cardio? Strength training? And why do you only breathe through your nose? Vaseline in your nose?

Ever since I broke my nose I haven't been able to breathe properly through it. At least I don't have to worry about Vaseline!

If this is sparring then shouldn't this be in the Standup forum?

Sorry for being so vague.

Cardio workouts, which includes running, jump roping, bag work, sparring, etc. I breathe through my nose because I use a mouthguard. I used vaseline because my nose would get dry (or in the case of sparring, to help with bloody noses), but I guess that was wrong.

yeah, i figured. dont clear everything out of your nose because you need some mucas in there to stop dust particles and other small things in the air from getting into your sinuses. This happens to me quite frequently especially when i have a cold and i have to blow my nose a lot. you dont have to keep it all in there but it would be better if you didnt clear ALL of it out. hope this helps
