So I signed up for bjj this week, and attended class Mon, Tues, and Thurs. and i gotta say its already got a hold of me. I've been taught a few submissions, sweeps, gaurd passes, etc. maybe a dozen or so techniques in all. But i find myself reveiwing each one step by step in my head all day(is that normal?), to the point where I had drifted off and noticed I was practicing a grip and my friends were staring at me like wtf? Anyway its awesome and I have infinitely more respect for people who dedicate thier lives to it. I've never really realized how much is behind it, I have a mere drop in the ocean. Anyone have any advice for a noob taking his first step on an amazingly long road?

ps. my neck and shoulders are really fucking sore, i guess i don't know when i really need to tap yet.

thx

just be consistent on attending class and enjoy the new lifestyle!

keep training.

write stuff down.

you aren't full fledged until you hip-escape in your sleep.

Cheers:D

Long, wavy trip from there that you will enjoy.:D

Serious.

thats a great idea! thanks man, i have a little art backround too, so i'll draw diagrams
thats just the type of tip i was looking for, awesome.

now about this hip escape you speak of . . . . . . . .

Its all normal :)
I work on a farm an spend alot of time in a tractor by myself with very little to do mentally. I spend most of the time thinking of the last person i rolled with were i should have done such an such, or thinking about my technique setting up submissions an stuff.

But my advice for when rolling is to slow down an think about what your doing an roll more defensively. Dont go for stuff thats not there, dont burn your grip tryin to hold someone when you shouldnt. Dont try to power though an beat people with strength alone.

Dont worry so much about submissions. Work more on getting a good position an holdin it, let them make a mistake then make the most of it.

I'm only 5'2 an 140lb so im always rolling with guys taller/heavier an its always a laugh when they try to power through me an i always end up either taking there back(for the RNC) or in mount because they think they can just over power me with bad technique.

Dont be one of those people :) And if something is on then tap! Especially arm bars! Havina sore elbow for two weeks sucks

I can attest to that! My elbow was killing me after being put in an armbar. I'm so inexperiences that I didn't grab my hand fast enough and it was hard to tap because my hand was trapped under him. It is good now though :P

Kudos on the humbleness.
I can't stand seeing people start training and making out they are the keenest person ever.
'No you don't understand how much I love it.'

Yes I do.

my neck and shoulders are among the three things that are nagging me with random pains most of the time...along with my damn toes.

You just get used to it after a while though.

oh shit its matt hughes junior!

I just started about 3 weeks ago, and I'm an artist too. I drew out and diagrammed most of the submissions I learned, and find myself walking around going through the steps one at a time. Mentally practicing helps no matter what sport you are into. I find that I break bjj down way more in my mind than when I played basketball or other sports. I guess because your moves have to be instantaneous or you will make a mistake that will end up bad for you. Other sports you have multiple opportunities to overcome mistakes...

i think my girlfriend gets mad when were making out and i pass to sidemount.

I've been known to hip escape in my sleep. My girlfriend doesn't like it because it tends to wake her up when i do it.
