Not really.

His interim belt was just as legitimate as Jones' "real" belt, if not moreso. And unlike Jones he was willing to defend it against top contenders.

If anything this retirement has added another asterisk to Jones' career and made Aspinall famous as the guy Jones was scared to fight.

Jon won a paper belt off of Gane after Frank left, "defended" it against a retired fireman, and now is retiring himself.
It's like Jon got a special little boy HW belt made for him to hold onto like this as long as he could, until an actual HW champion arrived in the form of Tom.

Aspinall just needs to keep defending against Gane, Almeida, Volkov, etc. and keep knocking down top contenders, and he's the real champ. You can complain about weak division, no Francis, blah blah blah. Doesn't matter.
