Let me save you some time. I don't know what the technique is. That's what I was hoping you guys could help me figure out. If you're still interested, read on. Growing up, there were a few instances where someone would say no to my dad. He would then send me into the other room so they could talk. Once the talk was over, the person who was previously saying no, would suddenly say yes. example 1: When I was 14 or 15, I was at the endodontist and we didn't have insurance. My parents were poor and it was going to cost over $2000 to get my wisdom teeth pulled. As soon as I heard that, I was thinking, "shit, well I guess I have to live with this pain cuz I know we can't afford that." Then my dad told me to go wait in the car while he talked to the doctor. After several minutes my dad came out and got in the car and started to drive us home. He said I had an appointment to have the teeth pulled in a few days. When I asked him how the hell he pulled that off, he said "If I wanted you to know that I wouldn't have sent you to the car." example 2: One time he bought this tiny sailboat. It could fit 2 people at the most, and it was only about the size of a windsurfing board. Because it was so small he never considered it a real boat, and didn't realize he had to register it with the DMV. So we drove up to this lake, it was like a 4 hour drive, and when we got there we had to buy some kind of day pass in order to use our boat in the lake. Only the lady was saying that she couldn't sell us the pass because our tiny boat wasn't registered. My dad argued with her a little bit but she wouldn't budge. She said she would get in trouble if she gave us the pass. Anyhoo, once again, dad told me to wait in the car. A few minutes later he came out with the lake pass in his hand. Again, I pressed him with questions but he refused to tell me how he did it. So these were my possibilities and likelihood of each: 1. He's bribing them - unlikely since my parents were always pretty poor, also, doubtful that you could bribe an endodontist since he works for himself. 2. He's offering sexual favors - highly unlikely, but I had to include it since I knew some sherdogger would suggest it. But even if the endodontist was gay, he probably had enough money that he could get his own boy toys that were much more attractive than my father. Plus the lake lady was much younger and was attractive enough that she wouldn't have to risk her job just to get some action. 3. He's bribing them with work - Just like when Marge Simpson couldn't afford to send Lisa to that private school, she secretly agreed to do all the school's laundry so Lisa could attend that school. - Unlikely, only because this could have worked on the endodontist, but it wouldn't have worked for the lake lady, because she didn't seem like she had the decision-making power to negotiate something like that, and I doubt my dad would make separate 4 hour trips up there just to sweep their floors and whatnot. 4. He's begging them - unlikely, since we explained to the lake lady our situation and how far we drove and she didn't have any sympathy and didn't want to risk losing her job. I'm not sure how any further begging would have convinced her. 5. He's doing something illegal - either bribing them with drugs, blackmailing them, or threatening them with violence. This one may not be so unlikely. When I was real little I remember shady characters coming over and they would measure bags on a scale and whatnot, so I know he at least used drugs, if not sold them. He either stopped using when I got older or he got better at hiding it. Blackmail seems unlikely because you'd have to know something about the person, and he couldn't have anticipated the lake lady not selling us a pass. Threatening violence... I'm not sure. I would be surprised if this was the answer, but he did hang with shady characters, so honestly if he wanted one of his friends to come burn down someone's house I bet he could find someone to do it. 6. He's just got awesome negotiating skills - unlikely, because then there would be no need to send me to the car. He could do that with me there, and I could even learn a thing or two. So.... Mayberry's full of smart guys. Are there other possibilities I'm not considering? Or is my dad threatening people?
