Muscular differences Chimps vs Human

your right, comparing an ants strength to a humans is apples and oranges, but the pound for pound strength of certain animals is fascinating

While I don't pretend to understand the musculature of an ant compared to a monkey, it is well known that smaller creatures have a higher potential for better weight to strength ratios.

I think we should eliminate that ant from this discussion. As far as I know they have an entirely different physical makeup in regard to strength. They simply don't have muscles in the same sense as we (mammals), so the comparison doesn't make any sense - just like the ridiculous explosiveness of frog legs can't teach us shit in this context.

The human/primate/monkey perspective is what makes this discussion so interesting - the differences seem to be so small, but the effect is huge.

on the subject of the ants, I saw something along these lines and they said that despite their incredible strength they way they are made up an ant the size of a human would not be able to support its own body weight.

So are chimps considerably weaker at pushing than pulling?

Yeah... we still need an answer to that one.

Somebody needs to go push an ape and see what the fuck happens.

My guess? Leverages and fast twitch muscle fibers. Plus testosterone.

Less "evolved" primates have fucking freakish muscle density. A gorilla or a bear they figure has 3-4X the muscle density of your average human. Which is still at least double what the average powerlifter or strongman has going.

Did somebody post the video of the female baboon or whatever totally wrecking a sumo wrestler at tug of war?

I'd have to take the bear in that fight...a large Grizzly can weigh 1500lbs whereas a large gorilla is more like 500lbs...imagine what a swipe from this thing would do to a gorilla:

Back in the old days before PETA they used to pit animals against each other in kind of a sick sport, and when they would put lions up against bears the bear would almost always kill or maim the lion with one swipe of it's paw.

In medieval times they would often have "bear fights" where they stick one in a cage with (usually) 4 dogs and see which team won.

If I remember correctly the bear usually won but was too injured to fight again. Also, sometimes the dogs would take it.

Oh yeah, and on Discovery a few years back I saw a program pitting many animals together to see who would win amongst all of them. The winner was a surprise: a polar bear.

I would've thought a Liger.

I Still Don't Know What That Means!!!!???

Liger's are ridiculously huge, I really would have thought they would win aswell.
