I have been reading posts and learning for some time and finally decided to make my first post. What a great forum and and resource for people of all experience levels. Superb information for a newcomer like me.

I have done multiple searches and read Crazy_Jab215's wonderful posts on bags and pads as well as gloves but still had a couple of brief questions. First, about me: I am 5'5" 140 lbs and looking to train a bit with a muay thai heavy bag. I have some prior experience with boxing technique from many years ago but at this point I am simply looking to get a good workout on the bag, improve technique, and power/strength in the convenience of my home. I have read the various recommendations on bags and gloves and am looking at the following bag brands: Ringside or Combat Sports (I know they are sister companies) as well as the IMF Tech training gloves.

My question regarding the bag is whether a closed-cell foam liner is a necessity. Some bags have them and others don't. Obviously, those with the liner will be softer but with the IMF Tech gloves, which I understand have a good deal of padding over the knuckles, what are your thoughts on the need for a closed-cell foam liner in the bag. I note that closed-cell lined bags are significantly more expensive than those without. It is my intent to hit the bag about three days per week. Is it worth the extra money for someone who will not be training as hard as most people here?

With respect to the IMF Tech gloves, are they really a pain to get on and off with the elastic cuff? Is there anything comparable in terms of knuckle padding and comfort?

Thanks much for what I am sure will be great advice.

Congratulations on a first post that doesn't completely suck, and is actually pretty damn good.

I cannot comment on foam encased heavy bags as I've never seen one before. I have never had a problem with a bag that has been properly filled though (which I believe to be the most important factor.)

As for gloves, I have used

16 oz Windy Training
16 oz Twins Training
12 oz Ringside bag gloves
Ultimate Classic Ringside Mex Bag gloves
12 oz Everlast hook and loop professional bag gloves
Thai Smai 16 oz Training

What you should look for is...

Appearance
Wrist support
Knuckle padding
Glove integrity (i.e you want a glove that holds it's shape)
Toughness
Fit (too roomy? too tight?)
Construction quality
Feel

3 types...

Training gloves
"Full size" bag gloves
Mexican style bag gloves

Each will have their own characteristics on the above criteria I put above. If you have a question on any of the above gloves, let me know.

are you talking about elastic cuffs like these?

if yes, imo they are kind of a pain in the ass to get on/off...others might like that type but i dont like those at all

Congrats on your first post. I have a Fairtex thai bag and an Everlast regular heavybag and neither have a foam lining. I wrap up my hands before boxing, put on my IMF Tech's and I'm good to go. I've never had any problems.

Thanks for the great advice.

blaa_kriger - yes, those are the ones I was talking about. Thanks

I'm also in the market for a muay thai bag, but I don't have a place to hang a heavy bag.

If you don't have a place to hang a heavybag go check out the heavybag stands at Ringside or Combat Sports.
