I have been watching some Muay Boran videos on the internet. I must say I really like this style. For shits and giggles I would like to know more about this technique. I have searched the internet for DVDs of this, but can't find any. Does anyone know of any? If I had more money I would have my instructor teach me what he knows. All and all it's just cool to watch.

For those of you who have never heard of this site you would check it out.

I loved learning about the history of MT. Very fascinating.

Muay Boran = old muay thai.

Widen your stance. Now you're doing muay boran.

you cannot improve upon the perfect striking form.

Oh God, widen your stance and you're doing muay boran, that's just a ridiculous statement

For the TS, most of the stuff you see on the internet that is called muay boran isn't really what muay boran is. Muay Boran is divided into regional variations such as Muay Lopburee, Muay Korat, Muay Chaiya.

Muay Loburee is long gone, though Muay Chaiya is alive and welll through Kruu Preang in Bangkok, who I studied under. Real Muay Boran looks like MMA, there are takedowns, locks, and other kinds of MMA techniques. Go to youtube and search for Muay Chaiya and you'll see Kru Preang's videos. He's practically one of the last grandmasters. MB is almost dead due to the fact the rules were changed due to fatalities...with the introduction of gloves, most MB elements were lost and competition MT was born....no-one does MB now not because it is ineffective but because its impossible to make money from it. Muay Chaiya specialises in punches coming from all angles, which many people are finding success with in MMA-aka Chuck Liddell. It also specialises in blocking very well, resembling the crazy monkey defense used by Rampage. Muay Chaiya looks totally, totally different than stadium MT

Muay Boran is the true art of self defence used by Thais to protect themselves. Like I said before, muay thai was made as a sport and was made as a sport for muay boran so people could train in a safe enviornment. All the techniqies useed in muay thai=muay boran +. Its very similar to san shou created as a sport for kung fu. A good demo of muay boran is the fight scenes in "The Protector" from Tony Jaa.

either you know more about Muay Boran than anybody I know, or you're just a dumbass.

I defer to your expertise. Chuck is THE man.

no worries mate

www.ancientmuaythai.com has a good breakdown of the different styles

grandmasters of a certain style don't know much about other styles. The last "known" grandmaster of muay boran was Ajarn Setr Kiripatyai, who developed the muay chaiya style into what it is known today. He studied from 14 different ajarns which is why Muay Chaiya boxers have queensbury like elements in the attack such as pong-pad-pid-purd ( block, parry, slip, bob and weave) and emphasises protecting the face with a high guard-as opposed to muay lopburee and muay korat. In addition, kicks aren't made by dropping the hands, the whole philosophy of kicking is different. Muay Chaiya boxers do not like to clinch, and this is reflected in modern southern mt fighters not clinching a lot. Many people will tell you that muay chaiya is a tma that is not effective as regular muay thai, but anyone who in acquainted with the scene in thailand has heard of the legendary chuetchaiya camp that used Muay Chaiya in the ring. Again, because the rules are limited, many of the elements of throwing and grappling are gone (toom, tub, jub, hak). For all intents and purpose, thais did mma for hundreds of years.

Wow this is some good stuff on this web site. Thanks a million.

Just to really add to the mess, the four old regional styles Korat, Chiaya, Lupree, Pra Nakon all had sub region variants or village styles. While except for Chiaya the main branches are mostly broken, many of village sub-systems are still alive only becuase they can still get away with Muay Kard Cherk, or rope bound boxing. Every now and again you can find somebody that still teaches that way. I was taught that way, and it really changes the way some of the basic guards and defense work. Kinda like the difference between 4oz and 12oz gloves.

bkkmuaythai

this site has a very concise breakdown on MT history.

i have never read so much confusion and misinformation

and when i said misinformation i was not refering to bkkmuaythai
