Does any use a mouthguard when they roll? I have been doing a lot of grappling lately and I am tired of getting my mouth smacked and thought wearing a mouth piece would be a good idea.

Wearing a mouthguard will slightly decrease the chance of you losing teeth. It will not stop you from getting slapped or kneed or elbowed or kicked in the mouth.

There is still a chance you will lose teeth while wearing a mouthguard, just less of a chance.

No shit

I always roll with one, I kind of think its foolish not to. It does lessen the impact on your teeth but it mainly prevents your lips getting smashed your teeth which cuts down on split lips etc.

It cost me several hundred dollars to fix a rogue elbow that chipped my front tooth. So I would be foolish to let that happen again. I wear a mouth guard when I roll. Also, to cut down on split lips, put some chap stick on. If you turn up with really dry lips, of course they will split easily.

I recommend a custom made one as it fits far better and stops you having duck lips, another way to get your lips cut up.

Always. I have gone so far as buying one on a business trip when I was rolling out of town and boiling the water in the hotel microwave.

I use a cheap one (I would love to have a custom though). One thing I have noticed that may just be coincidence.....

The guys at the gym with heath insurance wear mouth guards. Odd that the dudes with the most to loose don't care to. I have even purchased extra boil ond bites and handed them out to guys who complain they don't have the money to buy one. I know it is a lame excuse because you can get them 2 for $5.

No one uses mouth guards or cups in judo so I've never seen the need in bjj. Lots of guys I train with do though.

I don't have many issues with my teeth apart from the occasional busted lip and bleeding gums, it's the mat and gi burn on my face and feet that I get the most.

I always wear a mouth guard when rolling, but I never wear it for judo. I'm not sure why that is...

I would say about 30-40 percent of the people I train with wear mouth guards. I like the cheap ones that are like a dollar from titlemma.com or most other sites. They hold together better then all the shock doctor mouth guards I've used in the past. They're also more low profile.

I've started to recently, no actual reason but better safe than sorry for me.

Not related, but I always wear a cup when rolling ever since a failed guard pull ended upbeing knee-on-my-groin situation

I do, but it's a cheap one. I'd like to get a more quality mouthguard. I don't wear a mouthguard when I train at my academy but when I'm on campus at school and the only people to train with are mostly beginners, the spaz level is through the roof.

There is a reason why my username is Toothless King.

So yes, wear a mouthguard.

Any recommendations where I can find a custom mouthguard in Australia/Asia?

I tried emailing Rhino mouthguards and Kombat mouthguards a few times to no avail. I really do not like the fact that they are not answering emails.

I've been confused as to why people prefer brand name mouthguards over dentist made ones. Has anybody any experience with both?

always have as the first tournie I competed in required one...

IMO it's harder to get in oxygen wearing one so your cardio might be hampered a bit, but for those guys that don't wear one but then MUST during competitions, they'll be at a disadvantage.

I remember a while back Johny Hendricks saying that he wished he would of trained more with the mouthguard in and I assume it's for that very reason...
