This weekend proved that all you have to do is take away the gloves and a mediocre mma fighter can beat a pro boxer via standup. This was always the case. Another example is Overreem who is the k1 champion. He came in the Ufc and his striking was exposed. Boxers are like fencers while mma fighters are people with real swords.

What base had the most success overall? Sambo. Fedor ruler a divison for 10 years with that base. Now khabib is carrying the torch. The us can honestly learn a thing or two from applying sambo in their training regiments. Too bad you have to travel to a shitty country like russia to get real experience. Aka with daniel cormier and cain was nothing until khabib and his homies came into the gym and carinated those one dimensional wrestlers with knowledge.

Overeem his striking is never exposed.
Fighting with 4oz gloves is a Whole other game.

Sombo is awesome, but I'm not sure how you get Sombo having the most success because two high-level guys have found success with it, especially when said fighters cross-trained.

You have to get a much larger sample size to see what has the best representation overall, across wider populations of fighters.

I think it's fairly obvious at this point if you wanted to have an MMA career, but could only start one martial art in your teens to build as a base, the smartest option would be wrestling.

Uh huh. And how many wrestlers and Jiu-Jitsu guys have found success? A hell of a lot more

Lyoto did great with karate. I still would recommend you do Muay Thai instead

Bullshit, kabib proved the best base for MMA is Islam...the fuck you talkin bout TS?

Sport Sambo is great, but the ruleset is pretty retarded (can't use chokes) and the heavy accent on gi-grappling is something that does not translate to MMA well. Combat sambo develops a very well rounded fighter who can strike and grapple, but doesn't really excel anywhere. Khabib is just an exception.

IMO, the best base for MMA is folkstyle or catch wrestling. Add BJJ on top of folkstyle wrestling base and you have the ultimate grappler, Askren has it all figured out. Or just be a good catch wrestler like Barnett. IMO, a pure wrestling base is a more efficient base for MMA than a striking one or a mixed one (i.e. combat sambo).

Yes. It is a great base because it covers so many phases of MMA. Fedor was world sambo champion and was also on the Russian National Judo team and has said he has been boxing since childhood. Fedor also trained with world class kickboxers in Holland. Khabib also had access to wrestling and judo training in addition to his sambo training.

Now I disagree with you saying "Overeem was exposed." For one, he was on an entirely different supplement program when he was in K1. He also did very well in the UFC beating many great fighters like Werdum, Brock, Hunt, Arlovski, JDS, Mir, Nelson, Aleksei, and more. He even fought for the title. Sure, he lost a few by brutal KO but he was top 5 in the UFC for most of this decade it seems.

Still wrestling bud. Same as it's been since the beginning and it is not changing.

The "best" base is wrestling.

Also the most boring. And lol @ people using Paulie/Lobov to try and shit on boxing.

Reem is a kickboxer for a start, and his striking was never exposed, just his chin, look at when most pure boxers go into MMA, if its kept standing the boxer's power becomes overwhelming

Pretty much this.

Khabib’s sambo base has a freestyle wrestling base.

He started wrestling as a toddler and sambo/judo as a 12 year old.

Tim Sylvia proved just be big and have a jab. I guess that's the best base for MMA.

Its wrestling,
Heavyweight -DC WRESTLER
LIGHTHEVYWEIGHT -JONES WRESTLER
WELTERWEIGHT- USMAN WRESTLER
LIGHTWEIGHT- KHABIB WRESTLER
BANTAMWEIGHT AND FLYWEIGHT- CEJUDO WRESTLER

No. The most successful base is to going to college, learning to read and do basic calculations and go on with life. But since you insist, go have few rounds with professional boxers and tell us all about it. You don't have to travel to shitty countries to learn sambo. There's plenty of it in the US. But first put in that application for a passport and complete your GED or whatever they give as an alternative to imbeciles in the US.
