Looking at BJ Penn's record (30 fights, 16 wins), it just seems he's one of the most overrated fighters in UFC Hall of Fame. The guy fought 30 fights with only 13 finishes to his credit. Never had a more than 4 fight win streak. And before you go about talking about the guys he fought, the only Hall of Fame caliber fighter he beat was Matt Hughes. The rest of the guys were good but not amongst the greatest in their division. GSP, BJ Penn, Matt Hughes, all fought each other repeatedly (about 9 mights amongst just the three of them), and BJ has the worse record amongst the trio. I'm not sure what I'm missing here that make's Penn any greater.

TS is new to MMA. Welcome kid.

If BJ retired after his KO of Hughes, we wouldn't have these stupid threads popping up all the time.

Edit: Gomi wasn't at the top of his division?

Yeah, TS is maybe 14-15 years old.

IF only one could use a time machine and go back and mention something to BJ.

True, but doesn't diminish what BJ had already accomplished.

Still the LW GOAT. No one has surpassed him yet.

A lot of greats have up and down records because they were fifgting top competition

If you grew up watching penn youd understand how good he is he fought lyoto machida at a catchweight i mean i cant bring myself to defend him because it makes no sense i ben followin the sport before ufc and gsp greased that fight idc what anybody says

Like others have said, you need to watch the fights. BJ fought guys sometimes three times his size, no exaggeration.

Bj has thr potential to be the goat.. but not the ambition. Not the will. So i agree.. hes overated as fuck. But he also couldve had a much better career if he eas motivate throught his career.

Stopped reading here.

Watch fights instead of looking at fight finder

GSP didn't grease himself, his corner did, dumbass.

Now go back to school and learn how to spell.

Welcome to the all-time Sherdog Thread fail club!

Motivated BJ is a Sherdog trope for a reason, but at the height of BJ's arc he's a p4p great. He was a frustrating asshole with a steep decline, but you re a laughable noob if you think he s overrated or not a HOFer. He fought above weight for all of those GSP/Hughes fights, a thing nobody not named Frank Edgar does anymore. Thanks for the chuckle TS

Bj had the most natural talents than any other fighter in history. He may have wasted it on eating burritos and not training, but even doing that, he still took home two straps in two different weight classes.

Bj truly is the prodigy.

When you want to fight Fujita (1st choice b4 Lyoto) and u´re a LW, somewhere somehow u clearly have some ambition...

He and Gomi were the 2 top guys in the world at the time at 155. Penn fought and defeated many top guys at the time. Had to have been a fan back then to appreciate how good he was.

He was great. He just didn't retire when he should have. His losses are almost all to the cream of the cream. He fought bigger guys and didn't pad his record. It was clear after BJ vs. Frankie 2 that he was done and he should have stopped or gotten serious then. He is a great champion but laziness is the reason he isn't in the discussion for GOAT.

Yup. There was a time every lw out there said BJ was the best lw in the world, period. Lots of light weights lost the fight mentally before they even stepped in the cage with bj.
