JDS withstood worse punishment throughout the fight anyway. You're telling me he couln't have taken a couple punches from Cain there? Cain would've likely hugged him against the cage anyway. Bullshit. Let the man go out with some dignity.

It's not about could he "take them," it's is he intelligently defending. Curling up into a ball is not doing that, thus the fight is stopped. Not all fights that are stopped due to GnP, for example, are because the strikes are devastating, but because the guy getting hit can't defend.

Even worse, JDS went from a position where he could defend himself (sitting upright) to one where he couldn't. If that's not an admission that he was done I don't know what is. A couple of strikes would have been superfluous.
