As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, a proposed fight between WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi, and "Sugar" Shane Mosley, has fallen apart for April 27th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Malignaggi (32-4, 7KOs) told BoxingScene that he wants to fight former champion Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30KOs) on the April date.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who promotes both Malignaggi and Maidana, has two fights in mind - and they don't include the those boxers facing each other.

Schaefer would like to match Malignaggi against former two-time welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22KOs). In his last fight, Berto lost a spirited twelve round decision to Robert Guerrero in November. A fight between Berto and Malignaggi was briefly discussed a few years ago, when both boxers were promoted by Lou DiBella.

In terms of Maidana, Schaefer wants to match him in a mouthwatering fight against Argentine countryman Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30KOs). Matthysse would first have to take care of business on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, where he faces Mike Dallas Jr. in a Showtime televised fight.

"I'm hoping that Lucas wins this weekend because one of the fights that I've been discussing is Lucas Matthysse and Marcos Maidana. That's a fight that we want to do," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.

"Another fight that I'm interested in doing is Andre Berto against Paulie Malignaggi. I want to see what happens with Lucas, but I think this is a fight that fight fans really want to see - Matthysse against Maidana. That is one fight that I'm going to try to make and then see if I can make Berto against Malignaggi."

Matthysee-Maidana is a mouth watering fight.

I'd actually prefer to see Mathysse/Garcia.

Also, great to see Berto in contention for another title shot. Why should you have to win fights to fight for a title?

GB wants to be like the ufc.

Might as well do Mosley vs Jersey Shore since Maidana fight was always hot steam.

Matthyse-Maidana is an irrelevant fight right now. Two different divisions. Matthyse has a belt at 140, Maidana wants one at 147.

When Matthyse moves up, lets see it. Until then they need to quit hiding their own fighters from Matthyse.

After reading that WBA Welterweight champion Paul Malignaggi said that he wants Marcos Maidana in his next defense of the belt next April 27th, former champ Maidana jumped at the occasion. Malignaggi was going to face Shane Mosley on the April date, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York - but the fight fell apart for financial reasons.

“I’m glad that there is still some old school fighters that have some balls and duck no one like Paul Malignaggi. He wants to fight me and I say let’s do it. There are no excuses for the fight to be made so I think Golden Boy Promotions will get it done,” Maidana said.

“I never understood why they would pick Shane Mosley in the first place as I had earned my title shot in a WBA eliminator last September so I was the one who was supposed to get Malignaggi. Now the Mosley fight fell through and Paulie and me don’t have fights scheduled so I want that fight,” El Chino continued.

“I’ve instructed my advisor to immediately get in contact with Richard Schaefer and try to reach an agreement. I want the fight and I’m the WBA mandatory, Paulie wants the fight, the fans want the fight and I’m sure TV networks would buy the fight so unless there is a reason that we don’t know the fight needs to be done,”, Maidana added.

Maidana’s advisor Sebastian Contursi explained that “actually we were expecting a phone call from Golden Boy in order to see what big fight they have in store for Marcos until suddenly we’ve read the news about Paulie. A world champion calling out for a dangerous opponent - that’s healthy for boxing! Paulie was Maidana’s first candidate in the list and now it seems that we have the opportunity to get it done.”

“What it really concerns me is that right after Maliganggi challenged Marcos I read that Richard (Schaefer) mentioned Andre Berto as a possible rival for Paulie. I just don’t get it. We don’t want to be bypassed again on this WBA world title so we will let Richard know that Team Maidana badly wants Malignaggi,” Contursi added.

"Schaeffer said..."

"Schaeffer would like..."

Schaeffer is usually always the guy who comes up with these retarded matchmaking ideas. Just like his campaign to snub the Trout/Alvarez fight for Cotto/Alvarez. Wanting one of his champions to fight the loser of another bout, essentially. It's safe to say that Swiss bankers don't know shit about boxing.

The World Boxing Association has ordered WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7KOs) to face his mandatory challenger Diego Chaves (22-0, 18KOs). The negotiations period starts today, January 24th, and will close on the 23rd of February 2013. If the two sides are unable to reach an agreement, then the WBA will order a purse bid date. Malignaggi is scheduled to return on April 27th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Malignaggi was going to face Shane Mosley, but their match fell through due to a financial disagreement. Chaves has the WBA's interim-crown at 147 and first captured that title last July.

I hope he vacates and fights someone we care about.

He can't. Paulie doesn't have the star power, He needs the belt. He is become a reg name now with the stellar announcing job he been doing latey but I think he needs a belt to get a star in the ring with him, Or he becomes to high risk for anyone to fight.

While the belt obviously helps, he's not a bad "name" opponent for a star (especially as the 147lbs division is actually pretty empty with regards to name opponents) and he's not good enough that he's particularly high risk... while the Cano fight may have been a one-off he looked pretty awful and was a bit lucky to get the decision.

Ironically on paper, because he's made a successful defence, Paulie's actually the most established 147lbs champ...

Your the right 147lb is looking weak right now. How many stars at 147. Bradly(barely a star but a name), Ortiz, Devon, Lucas, Brooks(at 140),Khan(he already beat Paulie), Lopez might be a good fight, Marcos at 140, Gamboa at 140 could work(doubtful), Broner at 140.

Any of those guy would be worth dropping the belt for but Who else right now is worth dropping the belt for.

If he can land the Maidana fight, why not drop the title. Otherwise, fight Chaves. Let Mosley stay retired.

Paulie has a belt at 147.....

da fuck?

Yep.

Was brought in as an opponent for what was meant to be WBA Champ Senchenko's (the guy who just beat Hatton) coming out party. Instead Paulie beat the hell out of him and broke him mentally.

Almost had the same thing happen to him when he headlined the new show at the Barclay's Centre in a defence against the pretty average Pablo Cesar Cano. Paulie was pretty lucky to win the decision in that bout.
