Lastly, one more problem Garner and his team had was the unsavory idea of a white character (like Johnny Cage) being the hero who saves everyone. (Tan is mixed-race Chinese-British.) In Mortal Kombat lore, Johnny Cage is a Hollywood star who enters the tournament to prove he isn’t a pampered, spoiled A-lister. While Cage is rarely the capital-H hero in any given Mortal Kombat game, he is always somewhere near the center bringing levity to the serious stakes.

Garner didn’t confirm the precise whereabouts of Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat (his name came up a few times during the interview) but his absence thus far suggests the filmmakers are trying something different.

“I feel like if I was getting to make a movie with a diverse cast, it felt weird to have a white actor, literally Johnny Cage, be the hero of the story,” Garner says, adding that these discussions took place at the start of the movie’s pre-production nearly seven years ago “way before Black Lives Matter” and other pushes for diversity across industries including Hollywood.

Um... i dont think this fuck ever played MK then. Liu Kang is the hero, so it already has a non white hero. cage is literally less than his side kick. Cant even call him a lackey really.

Best part is not only Johnny Cage does'nt need to be THE Hero, but that's not even his role to begin with... he's traditionally some sort of funny sidekick most of times

Johnny was never the one who saved the day, he was more the comedic relief.

But regardless these sort of takes are annoying the shit out of me. At least if you're gonna do it don't go explaining it to the press to signal how woke you are.

Like many have pointed out, Cage isn't the hero of the main story...

I guess the filmmaker isn't familiar with the source material, which indicates it will probably suck.

A character whose always been in the story from day 1 doesn't make sense because hes white when he's not even the main character.

But what does make sense is creating a completely new character who has 0 og credibility.

Because you know the only acceptable fully white character is the hot white sonya getting teamed...sorry...getting on a team with an array of non white alpha males.
