Its not like I don't have any power in my hand but with amateur gloves and head gear it makes it hard to finish your opponent any exercises or muscles you can work on to help with your punching power

There may be other factors to you not being able to finish your opponent than just power. There are also a lot of factors involving power. You may have power but not be hitting your opponent clean. Or you may not be able to use your power because of poor foot positioning. I don't think headgear and gloves are the real reasons here. I've knocked down guys and been knocked silly myself in sparring yet we were wearing 16s with headgear.

People very often confuse KO ability to the power of punches but it is more then that. There are many people who hit hard but don't score KO's and vice versa.

It is important how you fight not just how hard you hit are you mixing power shots in your combos, are you pressuring your opponent, are you setting up shots these are all things that are important to KO's

Punch with your legs.

That must be why as I type this, the day after my first boxing class, my butt and thighs are on absolute f'ing fire.

thanks for the help so i guess what every one is saying is technique is mainly what does it but leg strength helps?

You need to develop all over strength. Just working some "special punching muscles" is not the way to develop power. Learn your techinque and get on a good S&P prgram. Theres lots of S&P info in the S&P forum here at sherdog. The answer to your question is in the FAQs

Did something happen in the locker room? :icon_twis

He swore up and down that it was THE BEST way to strengthen my hips! And he used to be a priest, so I trusted him! You're saying this isn't normal!?

Haha.

TS, obviously overall strength is going to help your punching power. I'm just saying that your legs are your most important muscles. Don't neglect upper body work though. Fuck, it's not rocket science.

Technique, Technique, Technique.

For serious. I knocked a 175 pound grown man out when I was 16 years old and 132 pounds (I know I was small, I was a late bloomer) and we were sparring with headgear and 16's.

Punch properly, make sure you snap your punch (don't push your punches). Find your range and strike so the end of your fist hits your target. Throw the punch, snap it, and then bring it back to your chin. Knockouts are caused by the force of the brain rapidly accelerating and decelerating, and thereby hitting the skull. The skull moves a lot slower if you push your punches, and a lot faster if you snap them.

And combinations > single punches

Most guys don't have, and won't EVER have single punch, KO power. Learn to place your shots, and throw 3's and 4's i/o 1's and 2's.

This is true.

I have had to revamp my right hand lately because my trainer noticed that I was dragging my back leg when throwing my right hand instead of planting it and driving with my hip. She finally made me go to a heavy bag and made me throw the right only for a round with her standing on my back foot. The difference was night and day.

everyone wants to increase striking power. but no one wants to take the time to lean to strike in the first place.

+Juan. Technique first. Power will follow.

That needs to be 'Point 1' in a "How to Punch Correctly' Sticky. Sums up what to do perfectly.

This guy has some good thoughts on power:

Technique is the most important. That means throwing it properly, proper rotation, proper foot placement, shifting body weight, etc. Beyond that I guess its timing. That means that each part of your body is firing off in the right order with the right timing to maximize the ultimate acceleration of your fist.

In terms of where the power comes from, legs, hips and core primarily. Then shoulders, but less so.
