Modified Kimura (Youtube)

Neat. Do you think this is possible in gi too?

That initial grip is really ineffective from the closed guard, because it's so easy to straighten the arm out and turn the thumb, and then get it back. And my guess is that pretty much every time your opponent is going to instinctively do that before you can get this lock. But looks cool, I'll try it out for fun.

yeah. im not sure how well it works. im trying it out tomorrow though. it just looked super sneaky.

i do this alot but with a different grip. i use a gable grip and anchor my wrists in the bend of the elbow, then raise my outside elbow and turn my body finishing the kimura. several small details like pulling the arm tight to your body and raising your elbow off the ground make this move successful.

works great from a triangle position if they hide the arm undner the leg to prevent you from pulling it across the body or if they bury the arm (grabbing the pants) from an initial kimura attempt.

also, if they straighten their arm you have several transitions depending what your go to moves are.

*Edit- Austin Tx Black Belt Sean Cooper is boss at this move. not sure if he has any videos on it but if you are in that area he can show you how it's done.

I may try this next time someone grabs their hip/pants. I think you'd have a lot of trouble finishing and controlling form here but as a grip break it's something I might use.

That defense will put them in a straight armbar, so it's not exactly a disadvantaged position for you.

From an open guard yes, from a closed guard you just turn your wrist, very easily. Using this from a closed guard limits your mobility and pressure, you have to really get out to the side and get heavy on the arm to make it effective. I use that grip for the ude gatame all the time from butterfly guard, but from closed guard it's too easy to escape unless you're a lot stronger than the opponent. You're not finishing that arm crush from the closed guard unless they just sit there and let you.
