Yes, I am old and I was there for Hughes vs Penn the first time around. Holloway vs Khabib feels eerily similar.

A technically talented smaller guy moves up to fight the biggest, strongest and most technical grappler at the next weight class up. At the time, Hughes had the same aura, if not more, than Khabib has today.

more like GSP/Penn 2.

Not even close. To start, GSP had a different aura. He was perceived as a generational talent who could do anything and everything. He fought nothing like Khabib does. Plus, Penn was given a much better chance at beating GSP than Holloway does against Khabib now.

Khabib and Hughes are similar styles with similar aura. The general consensus was that Penn, although superbly talented, would not be able to deal with the size and strength of Hughes, who had been manhandling much bigger guys.

Except BJ is more talented than Max and Khabib is more talented than Hughes.

The difference is Penn was better at Hughes's game, which was grappling. thread/

A smaller striker will 9/10 get beaten by a bigger grappler

Max is gonna go airborne quite often in this fight. If it does happen. He is smaller than Tony
and doesn't have the KO power to stop Khabib. He has good striking, but Khabib will have an overwhelming strength advantage.
I know it's old, but Conor with a bum knee kept Max down for 3 rounds basically.
He has improved, but he is going up in weight to fight the best grappler at 155.

And Khabib/Ferguson feels like Hughes/Karo

It’s easy to say that now in retrospect but that wasn’t the sentiment at the time. Of course there was a large contingent of Penn fans who rooted for him but the general consensus was that he was too small and Hughes was too big and strong for him to overcome.

Max doesn't have the level of grappling that Penn possessed or the power either. He is a volume guy
who wears you out. And he is usually the bigger guy in the cage at 145. He is going up in weight to fight a guy who could easily fight at WW.

Max is not the talent that Penn was but he is just as well rounded.

Bonus: They are both 26 year old Hawaiians at the time of these fights.

Not trying to be snarky because I know you agree but Penn had a hard time grappling with Pulver, Uno and Serra, then came out and smashed Hughes on the ground. Imagine how surprising that was.

I guess so. But Penn has that one punch power that Max doesn't really possess.
He will need that to have a hope of beating Khabib.
Khabib took everything Barboza could throw at him and walked right through it.
And Barboza is a far better striker than Max. Plus a lot stronger.

I just hope it is a good fight. If it does happen... Holding out hope its April Fools...
