Dwayne Johnson Confirmed to Star in THE JANSON DIRECTIVE

Dwayne-Johnson-Fast-Five-Dragonlord-1.jpg

Back in July, it was first reported that Dwayne Johnson was set to produce and star in Universal’s adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s (the Bourne series) book The Janson Directive. Johnson has today confirmed that he’s starring in the film, while Academy Award-winner Akiva Goldsman will pen the script. Johnson tweeted, "Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman will write the script. Let's roll... " The story follows a former consular ops agent who goes into business as a private security consultant after becoming uncomfortable with the high number of sanctioned killings as a covert operative. In his new occupation, he teams up with a sharpshooter to take on assignments that he deems worthy of aid.

Johnson most recently wrapped work on Fast & Furious 7, and while he’s expected to return for G.I. Joe 3, he’s been choosing more star vehicles for himself as of late. He’s currently filming the disaster pic San Andreas, he’ll be seen later this month as the lead in Hercules, and HBO picked up his new show Ballers to series. Johnson is one very busy man, but Janson Directive seems like a solid next step on his path towards world domination.

Aidan Gillen to Play the Villain in THE MAZE RUNNER Sequel

Aidan-Gillen-092614-Dragonlord.jpg

Aidan Gillen, who plays Game of Thrones character Littlefinger, will play the villain in Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, 20th Century Fox’s just-announced sequel to The Maze Runner. The Maze Runner is an adaptation of the first installment of the James Dashner YA trilogy. The movie, directed by Wes Ball, topped last weekend's box office with a solid $32.5 million. The movie also grossed $37.6 million from 50 markets for a worldwide total of $81.5 million (the film began rolling out in several territories last weekend). The film has yet to open in 27 markets, including nine of the top 15.

Ball is back for the sequel as are the producers, Temple Hill Entertainment and the Gotham Group. Lead Dylan O'Brien is also back. The story picks up — spoiler alert — after our teen heroes escape the deadly maze and are now in the run on an Earth that is a wasteland and ravaged by solar flares. Gillen will play Janson, who becomes the main antagonist of the Maze Runner books. He is also referred to as Rat-Man. The movie is due to begin shooting at the end of October. Gillen, an Irish actor with plenty of credits back in the U.K. film and TV scene, also played a CIA operative in the opening sequence of The Dark Knight.

Guy Pearce, Dominic West Join Michael Grandage's GENIUS

Guy-Pearce-092714-Dragonlord.jpg

Guy Pearce and Dominic West are to join Colin Firth, Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Laura Linney in Michael Grandage’s Genius. Pearce will take the role of F. Scott Fitzgerald alongside West as Ernest Hemmingway in leading theater director Grandage’s debut feature film. Adapted by playwright and screenwriter John Logan from A. Scott Berg’s book, Genius tells the true story of the complex relationship between literary giant Thomas Wolfe and Scribner’s iconic editor Max Perkins. Law stars as Wolfe opposite Firth as Perkins, with Kidman as Aline Bernstein and Linney as Louise Perkins.

Genius is the third collaboration between Grandage, his producing partner James Bierman and Logan following the hit stage productions of Red, inspired by artist Mark Rothko, which nabbed six Tony Awards (including best director) and, most recently, Peter and Alice, starring Judi Dench and Ben Wishaw. Genius will commence filming this October at Shepperton Studios and on location in the U.K. Grandage, who was artistic director at the Donmar Warehouse for 10 years, and Bierman are one of the most successful creative teams in the theater industry, winning Tony, Drama Desk, Olivier, Evening Standard, Critics’ Circle and South Bank awards.

John Slattery Joins Liam Neeson in Seth MacFarlane's TED 2

John-Slattery-092614-Dragonlord.jpg

Liam Neeson doesn't care that A Million Ways to Die in the West was a box-office disappointment - he's gonna star in Ted 2 anyway. The Taken 3 actor has signed on for the forthcoming comedy sequel, director Seth MacFarlane revealed on Twitter today. MacFarlane tweeted, "Yesterday Liam Neeson, today Morgan Freeman. Not a bad week for #Ted2." In addition, HitFix has exclusively learned that "Mad Men" star John Slattery is on board for the film. No specifics on either role is available at this time.

With nearly $550 million at the box office worldwide, Ted became one of the biggest hits of 2012 and the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy of all time. Mark Wahlberg returns as the lead with Amanda Seyfried taking over as the female lead from Mila Kunis. However, given that MacFarlane’s films have proved to be quite extended-cameo-heavy, it’s likely that Slattery won’t have that large of a role—especially since production on the follow-up has been underway for a couple of months now. The sequel opens in theaters June 26, 2015.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT to Shoot Entirely in Colorado on Dec. 8th

Quentin-Tarantino-Django-Set-011114-Dragonlord.png

It is now being reported that Quentin Tarantino's new western film The Hateful Eight will shoot outside of Telluride, Colorado and that everything – interiors and exteriors alike – will be lensed in the state. There’s also a planned start date of December 8th. The full cast has yet to be announced, but we’ve heard that Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Walton Goggins, and Samuel L. Jackson are attached with the possible addition of Jennifer Lawrence. The movie will be shot on glorious 70MM film.

According to the Denver Post pre-scouting for the shoot has already occurred and the $44 Million film will benefit from a $5 Million tax break for shooting in the state. The film’s Colorado budget includes $15.7 million for payroll, including a Colorado crew of 168, and $9.35 million in other in-state spending, including lodging. The state rebate of $5 million represents 20 percent of that spending. Prep work should begin early next month with shooting expected to start on Dec. 8 at the Schmid Ranch, on Wilson Mesa 10 miles west of Telluride.

The crew would be housed in Telluride and take a break over the Christmas holiday. The nearly 900-acre, high-mesa ranch, homesteaded in 1882, is under a conservation easement, which will require that the land be returned to its original state after filming is completed. The report also mentions that this will in fact be the biggest production to shoot in the state since True Grit.

Rumor: THE AVENGERS 3 Might Be Split Into Two Films

Avengers-Thanos-John-Byrne-Dragonlord.jpg

What's good enough for Harry Potter, The Hobbit, Twilight and The Hunger Games is apparently good enough for Marvel Studios, as a rumor coming out of a fan news page called the Daily Marvelite claims that the third Avengers film will an epic story split across two movies. They admitted that all their source has told them is that the battle with Thanos will play out over two films; it could simply be that Avengers 4 will be needed to win the day, or that the third film will be subdivided. The latter seems more likely if, as the report claims, the May 2018 and May 2019 "untitled" Marvel movies turn out to be Avengers 3 and 4.

How that would work, in terms of contracts, isn't clear; at least Robert Downey, Jr. and Chris Evans' deals will expire after one of those two films, and neither have expressed an interest in renewing their deal. That said, perhaps they'll shoot the movie all in one go and then split it into two films in post-production? Either way, it seems like they'd have to kick a little extra cash the actors' way, since knowing this far in advance that they were going to split it would seem like acting in bad faith otherwise.

1st Trailer for Joe Carnahan's STRETCH Starring Patrick Wilson

Stretch-Patrick-Wilson-092514-Dragonlord.jpg

Stretch has gone through a bit of a rough period. The film, directed by Joe Carnahan and produced by Jason Blum, was originally set for a theatrical premiere back in March, but Universal Studios decided to drop it from its release slate, choosing to utilize other creative methods. Now, with an Amazon and iTunes release on October 7, and a VOD release on October 14, the first Stetch trailer has debuted online.

Entertainment Weekly has now released the first trailer for Stretch and shows something more along the lines of The Transporter but with a sense of humor. Starring Patrick Wilson, the film sees a limo driver owing a lot of money to some bad folks and must turn over the dough by midnight. In desperation, he takes a job from a crazed billionaire and Hangover-style shenanigans ensue.
And, yes, it may not look like it at first, but that hippie-dippie-looking fellow with one helluva beard is indeed Chris Pine.

The film also stars Jessica Alba, Ed Helms, Norman Reedus, Ray Liotta, Shaun Toub, Brooklyn Decker, and David Hasselhoff. Stretch will be available on iTunes and Amazon on October 7th and on VOD on October 14th.

U.S. Trailer for the 'Best Horror Film of 2014' THE BABADOOK

The-Babadook-081514-Dragonlord.jpg

The Babadook is good enough that, after nine months of Sundance audiences flapping their gums about it’s virtues, Fantastic Fest audiences saw through any hype and responded enthusiastically to the film in multiple screenings over the past week. It’s good enough that, even with the debut of other impressive horror pictures (such as festival entries Cub, It Follows, and Shrew’s Nest — especially Shrew’s Nest) The Babadook still rings as the top horror film of 2014 so far. And now Icon has released the first Babadook U.S. trailer. Not only is this considered by many to be one of the best horror films of the year by far, but it’s also got the potential to become an unforgettable classic. The Babadook arrives in theaters and on VOD on November 28th.

Synopsis: Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son’s behaviour, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.

2nd Trailer for THE WEDDING RINGER Starring Kevin Hart

Wedding-Ringer-Josh-Gad-Kevin-Hart-Dragonlord.jpg

Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for director Jeremy Garelick’s upcoming comedy The Wedding Ringer. Starring Kevin Hart and Josh Gad, the movie has a lot going for it—a promising comedic duo, a fun premise, and a heartfelt friendship story at its center—and this trailer is quite funny. It's easy to imagine this will be a sizable hit in the empty January moviegoing landscape, and it’s certainly nice to see Lost alum Jorge Garcia onscreen again. The film also stars Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, Ken Howard, Olivia Thirlby, Cloris Leachman, Jenifer Lewis, and Mimi Rogers. The Wedding Ringer opens in theaters on January 16, 2015.

Synopsis: Doug Harris (Josh Gad) is a loveable but socially awkward groom-to-be with a problem: he has no best man. With less than two weeks to go until he marries the girl of his dreams (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting), Doug is referred to Jimmy Callahan (Kevin Hart), owner and CEO of Best Man, Inc., a company that provides flattering best men for socially challenged guys in need. What ensues is a hilarious wedding charade as they try to pull off the big con, and an unexpected budding bromance between Doug and his fake best man Jimmy.

Watch the New Green-Band Trailer for THE INTERVIEW

The-Interview-092014-Dragonlord.jpg

A few days ago, we got the red-band trailer for The Interview, and it was painfully funny. All the jokes were landing, and it helps that they’ve got a great premise: James Franco plays Dave Skylark, a vapid talk show host who, along with his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen), land an interview with Kim Jong-un (Randall Park). But their attempt at hard news gets upended when the CIA asks the duo to assassinate the North Korean leader. If you’re worried that the movie can’t work without R-rated jokes, this green-band trailer should put your mind at ease. This could easily be one of the funniest films of the year. The film opens December 25th, and also stars Lizzy Caplan.

Synopsis: In the action-comedy The Interview, Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show “Skylark Tonight.” When they discover that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the two least-qualified men imaginable, to assassinate Kim Jong-un.

Alex Winter Gives an Excellent Update on BILL & TED 3

Bill-and-Ted-092714-Dragonlord.jpg

Alex Winter: "[Bill & Ted] will be 40-something and it’s all about Bill and Ted grown up, or not grown up. It’s really sweet and really f---ing funny. But it’s a Bill & Ted movie, that’s what it is. It’s for the fans of Bill & Ted. It fits very neatly in the [series]. It’s not going to feel like a reboot. The conceit is really funny: What if you’re middle-aged, haven’t really grown up and you’re supposed to have saved the world and maybe, just maybe, you kinda haven’t?”

“There’s many versions of ourselves in this movie. [It’s] answering the question: ‘What happened to these guys?’ They’re supposed to have done all this stuff, they weren’t the brightest bulbs on the tree, what happened 20 years later? To answer that question in a comedic way felt rich with possibility.”

“Me and Keanu and [original writers] Chris [Matheson] and Ed [Solomon] are all very close and have remained close over the years. It took time to construct the idea, it took Chris and Ed time to build the first draft. Then we put a producer together and got a director [Galaxy Quest helmer Dean Parisot]. We’ve been working on drafts for the last couple of years. The script’s been finished for a while, but comedy is so specific. We’re in that world where producers are on, financiers are on and we’re just working and reworking the script.”

William Shatner Confirms Being Offered STAR TREK 3 Cameo

William-Shatner-Star-Trek-092714-Dragonlord.jpg

Despite tweeting out a denial that anybody had contacted him about Star Trek 3, William Shatner confirmed today that he had indeed been contacted about Star Trek 3 by none other than J.J. Abrams. Shatner said that while he was visiting Australia a couple weeks ago, Abrams called him from London, where he’s currently shooting Star Wars Episode VII. Shatner said Abrams told him, “I’m calling because the director of Star Trek, the next movie, has had an idea where you might be involved, so I’m calling to find out whether you would be interested.”

Shatner said he told Abrams, “It depends on what you do with the character, but I would be delighted.” Shatner said that Abrams warned him that he couldn’t say anything to anybody, and Shatner agreed not to even tell his wife.

However, when Shatner got back from Australia, he said, “It’s all over the Internet that the director had held an interview and said they want Shatner and Nimoy to be in the next movie. I’ll bet you J.J.’s frothing at the mouth at this point. So the news is out that they have an idea that they want Leonard and myself…they might want Leonard and myself in it. But I would love to do it. But how do you get me fifty years later into the movie? I mean how do you rationalize it. I know it’s science fiction, but even I couldn’t come up with an idea. So that’s the news on that.”

First Image from EQUALS Starring Nicholas Hoult, Kristen Stewart

Scott free Films has released the first image of the upcoming sci-fi film Equals starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult. The film takes place in a world without greed, poverty, violence, or emotion. A new disease called Switched-On-Syndrome threatens to activate these dormant emotions, instilling love, depression, sensitivity, and fear into those affected, who are then swiftly sent away and never seen again.

AVENGERS 2 Trailer Attached to INTERSTELLAR, BIG HERO 6

Avengers-Age-of-Ultron-White-Logo-Dragonlord.jpg

If Disney's marketing strategy for the highly-anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron is planned similar to the original superhero assembly, then we should have an official trailer sometime next month. In fact, a Russian site FilmPro reported today that the teaser will be attached to Christopher Nolan's Interstellar and most likely Big Hero 6, which both will hit theaters on November 7. But given that trailers are usually released online about a week before their theatrical runs, it's safe to say we should be dissecting and analyzing the Age of Ultron trailer by the end of October.

Interstellar revolves around a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

Big Hero 6 is an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax, a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada. When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago (Jamie Chung), neatnik Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr.), chemistry whiz Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez) and fanboy Fred (T.J. Miller). Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called

INHERENT VICE's New Ending to Deviate Significantly from Novel

Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Inherent Vice will soon be making its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, and while fans wait for the buzz to surface, a new image has been released online. According to the New York Times, Anderson wrote an “outrageous new ending for the film that deviates significantly from the novel,” although Phoenix notes that Inherent Vice novelist Thomas Pynchon was an active participant in the process (the reclusive author may even have a cameo).

When it came to adapting Inherent Vice, Anderson tells the NY Times he took a unique approach. To get a grip on the project, he adapted the entire 384-page novel sentence by sentence. “I basically just transcribed it so I could look at it like it was a script,” he said. “It looked like a doorstop. But I can understand this format. As big as it was, it was easier for me to cut down.” Inherent Vice opens December 12th.
