MMA is 'uncivilised, human cockfighting'

Just saw this quote from an acquaintance;

Somebody had MMA on the telly. That's not a sport; it's human cockfighting. You're not really civilized if you're getting off on two men (or women!) beating up on each other. I can accept sumo wresting or the mindless doofiness of WWF or the organized gladiator games of American football, but the caged street brawl of MMA and boxing is not humanity moving forward. If you support that stuff with attention or money you should really check yourself before you wreck...lots. That shit does not belong in the 21st Century.

The interesting part is how many people agreed with it. Is humanity truly moving backwards with MMA? What would you say to them?

Mma is when two humans fight in a cage surrounded by spectators.

So in a sense it isnt wrong

Haha yeah, I was actually impressed by that. A lot of people consider boxing safe because they wear "big gloves" and there's no blood, which is hilarious.

The obvious difference is that in MMA there are regulations and willing participants. In a cockfight/dogfight you're putting 2 animals in a cage with no way out except through each other.

It's violent and brutal but that's not really a problem to me if everyone involved understands and agrees to the risk.

Well, perhaps the latter applies but I’m pretty sure the fighters are consenting and also get paid for their efforts.
