Reality is right now we really don't know what Jones has said to the UFC over the last six months or so.
As far as we know Jones might of said back in January that he was leaning towards retirement. UFC probably told him to take more time. If we are to believe Jones, at some point before the other night he already told the UFC his plans(retirement). Then over the last few weeks he has been really been bombarded with fighting Tom questions that he probably called the UFC the other night and said either you announce it, or we do a press conference announcing my retirement, or I'm just going to tell the public I'm done. Dana's been getting hit hard on the Jones questions also and last night he probably just said F it and spilled the beans. Jones would've never made that announcement last night on his social media account if Dana just deflected the Jones question.
P.S.: As much as us fans want to throw a lot of the blame at Jones, some should land at the feet of the UFC(even though I can't blame them from a business stand point). I'm sure Jones started down this path a little shaky on retirement like a lot of fighters. Probably at various times he had the urge to fight again and other times he was done. UFC this whole time is always going to be holding out for this fight to occur as it is just good business. I'm sure they were contributing factors in Jones dragging this out longer as fans continued to lose patience. The UFC was probably the first to say to Jones take a little more time even if he didn't need it.
