MMA fighter has died today following a cage fight in Brazil

RIP. horrible. it's supposed to be a sport....

to be honest, this is one reason why investors need a healthy return to even think about this sport. there are things that can happen that can instantly materially destroy the value of the investment. and yes, it's part of that balance between fighters needing to get paid (at least at some levels) and investors needing to get compensated for the risk of their investment.

not to derail this thread. truly a tragic occurrence and i mourn for him and his family / friends / team.

Damn that's sad to hear.

I wonder why the back of the skull shakes the brain more than the front. The face takes some massive power strikes and they're usually standing up and talking before Buffer gets in cage
you're closer to the brain stem and if that area of your brain gets damaged then it is good night irene

Fucking sad to watch this.

RIP

That is why good matchmaking is very important as well. It's very risky to put someone like Cachoeira against Bullet Valentina or any old legend against young lion. Bellator fucks up all the time with squash matches. Not saying this particular fight was a mismatch because knock outs can happen but still.

RIP.

Its why I prefer a fight stopped too early rather than too late.

But 22 is no age. When it finally happens in the UFC everything is going to change.

Wonder why back of the head is so dangerous?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medulla_oblongata

One of the most vulnerable, yet essential parts of the human body. One good shot can mean paralyzation or death.

That’s why if you’re about to get in some kind of crash, a good brace position isn’t just covering your face & temples, you really need to cover the back of your head too.

Sad news. RIP..

Such a shame, such a young age to leave this earth. RIP.

The importance of a good ref in this sport can be the difference between life and death. Hence why Kim should never be allowed to do it again.
Did you watch the video? Wasnt even that bad. There have been much worse late stoppages

Because any sport with high exertion carries a risk of death. Athletes have died playing soccer and running a marathon. The main difference is the public does not go into moral outrage when it occurs in nonviolent sports.

If someone died as a direct result of a tackle I'd bet you we'd see some outrage. What makes MMA deaths especially hard to bear is that another person, unwittingly, caused the death. That what makes it even more tragic. Max Baer, the boxer who famously lost to Cinderella man and who'd had two opponents die earlier, allegedly suffered enormously from that and had nightmares. That movie should by the way be boycotted by all martial arts fan as it really spits on his grave, making it seem like he was proud and happy about having killed people in the ring.

And RIP to this poor boy. It's a dangerous sport.

Why? It sounds like he didn't die of a heart attack. He was punched repeatedly in the back of the head. It's very unlikely he had a condition that made his brain stem particularly susceptible to being damaged. Anyone can die if they're unlucky enough to get with enough force at a bad angle.
Watch the video, he wasnt

Really tragic to hear that. I can't watch the video
Its not bad. He gets rocked standing and collapses to a knee and the guy comes in with an uppercut and the ref steps in and he is still conscious even sitting up against the cage briefly then slowly slumps over and then becomes rigid

RIP warrior. Condolences to his family.

Wait till this happens on a UFC main card......it'll happen eventually.
