During the much anticipated mma vs boxing match up, many boxing and mma trainers are trying to explain the differences between both sports by how the angles of the shots are thrown during the fights. What are the difference between boxers and mma stand up and how does 'angles' affect punch efficiency?

One takes place in a four sided ring, the other an 8 sided cage. Obviously the angles are different

Kicks have different trajectories that you need to account for but, when it comes to punching, there are no secret angles that MMA fighters have discovered.

Well one thing is the ranges of boxing and MMA are entirely different, while ranges aren't angles they play a part in angles. For instance, in boxing they hang out a lot right in punching range or in the pocket....in MMA this doesn't happen often due to being allowed to clinch, go for takedowns etc. In MMA a lot of punching is done from kicking range, a thing in MMA that doesn't exist in boxing. If you look at MMA there's a lot more linear movement which happens 1. due to kicking which easily can exploit lateral movement and 2. due to the greater amount of open space in MMA. In boxing lateral movement is king due to the physics of punches and also because the ring is smaller with only 4 corners so the way you manage space becomes entirely different.

Hopefully this helps a bit. I can go into more detail if you guys would like.

You sound dense, if boxing was done in a giant octagonal cage with 4oz gloves but with the exact same boxing rulesets...it would look apparently different and angles, ranges, timing, movement, defense and offense would all be different. The arena of which you fight in has literal laws of applicability that are different from space to space and shape to shape. Same goes for rules, in amateur boxing you have less rounds and then there becomes a bigger focus on aggression rather than defense, the type of conditioning, punching, angles etc all appear a bit different...Olympic gold medalists aren't lesser athletes or less skilled than pro boxers, it's just a different sport.

That being said, of course boxers in general are much more nuanced and refined in their movement and technique for punching than MMA fighters are, duh. But there are differences that do and do not exist in each sport because of the rules and arenas along with many other factors.

The difference is no one in MMA can come close to doing this

Show me one then, or at least explain one. Remember that your challenge is to show an angle used in MMA that isn't used I'm boxing, not a technique, an angle.

I'm glad that I finally found someone with a brain that's willing to go into this. In fact we should take this to the standup forum so that we can get a proper discussion.

If you want to know the physics of angles of boxing, you need to watch lomachenko fight.

Well the problem with that is, it's more like....the angles that are effective in MMA and Boxing are different therefore angles are utilized differently for different reasons. I tried to explain why this is. If what you're asking is for me to find a punch landed in a position where a boxer has never before thrown one, well I really can't do that. But the angles are different which is a factor in how fighters move and punch regardless.

I hope this makes sense.

This... the farther you are the more time your opponent has to react to you trying to cut an angle. Boxing has a ton of pivots but in mma you see a lot more just squaring up and circling due to the ranges.

Conor's parents created an anglo...

That's the only anglo gonna be in da ring dat night, Holmes.

I don't think Irish are very Anglo. Anglos are a mix of French, German and English mostly. Where Irish have more of a Viking influence ethnically and culturally. Your joke was almost funny doe.

The difference is no one in MMA can come close to doing this

I heard someone say "Lomachenko's lead foot has a PHD from MIT in Physics" dude is amazing.
