MJW says Rickson was hand picking early UFC competition

1. Rickson wasn't involved in the UFC.
2. Yes, the Gracies strategically chose the participants. Smart business move.
3. The Gracies are a legendary fighting family. They were actually great grapplers and fighters (for the time), and they revolutionized the fight game forever.
Don't forget they would change rules in way they would favor them. That's why Saku x Royce had so many rounds, for example.
Rickson x Zuluzinho II had some controversy regarding rule changes also

black dynamite wasn't straight to dvd, though. and the movie is legitimately hilarious. and you can dislike the guy all you want, but facts are the gracie's did their best to ensure the competition was just fight for royce in ufc 1. big john tried to enter, and the gracie's didn't allow it because he had trained bjj already. whether or not the MA community was salty, the gracie's strategically chose who could compete in ufc 1.

I find MJW super annoying as an MMA talking head, but Black Dynamite is a fucking fantastic and hilarious film, for sure.

MJW why is this guy an actual talking head? He doesn’t have the right to talk on the Gracies man..

Guy never made one good movie, all those shits went straight to DVD.

Regardless of what he thinks about early UFC, Royce / Rickson actually competed. Royce still had to beat Ken Shamrock, and jacked monsters like Kimo who outweighed him by like 50lbs.

Pantoja just proved again on the weekend that bjj is fundamentally relevant / important in mma.

Sick of seeing this guy wax poetic on every subject under the sun like he’s an authority on it. You ain’t the Kobe of martial arts man, you acted in some b grade movies.. time to stfu.
While you're not entirely wrong, MJW has a legitimate martial arts background and more experience than 99% of the people on this forum that express their opinions off of little more than physique and eye contact during stare downs.

Mostly i agree with you though, no noteworthy boxer or kickboxers were interested in participating in the UFC for the pennies being offered. We thought it was just another version of the tough man competitions.

There was cherry picking, but honestly, guys like Severn and Shamrock were harder MMA opponents than pure strikers, even strikers that were at a higher level than those in the early UFC.

Melton Bowen was a legit boxer that fought at UFC 3, and he got disposed of pretty easily by a hobbyist grappler.

Maybe they’d have won anyway, but there were at least 3 guys on the planet more qualified than Steve Jennum and Fred Ettish.

More you look into the Gracie myth, more they look like bastard charlatans.

MJW can definitely come off as annoying when talking about fighting cause he never competed. Enough pro fighters have vouched for him saying he knows what he’s talking about and has amazing technique but it still sounds odd having a guy who never fought be an expert on fighting. I guess he’s no different than some mma analysts, though but still. And I’m happy you found that movie funny as well. It’s an amazing satire 😂. Euphoria and the coat hanger scene is too funny.

Why black dynamite why is also hilarious 😂😂

Yeah. That's life. When it is your idea, you are the producer, you secure the funding and you write the script, good chance you get to pick out who is the hero.

When Matt Damon's character in Good Will Hunting gets the girl because he is just magically smarter than all the kids at Harvard and he MEMORIZED all the books that an actual Harvard student was quoting... that's cause he wrote the script.

Royce stil had to go in there and win the fights.

Rickson would have had a very good chance of winning even with the best guys (who would fight for $1000 base pay and 50k for winning the whole thing)

But their objective was to sell the idea that a smaller man could win in street fights with Gracie BJJ, which worked. 30 years later and BJJ is still very popular with shorter smaller athletes.

There is a jiu-jitsu jistsu ( "bjj" ) school/club in nearly every town where I live. Absolutely there is a BJJ place "nearby" in the vast majority of the US in places where any quantity of people actually live.

not surprising, and yeah there have been hintings at that all along. the clan as a whole was just sort of sneaky, they definitely wanted to maximize whatever advantages they could find.

What is MJW's excuse to explain how Rickson won VTJ (Japanese organization promoted by Satoru Sayama) in 1994 and 1995?

As far as MARTIAL ARTS MJW has every right to speak. Dude is a legitimate MARTIAL ARTIST. I don’t think you know what the fuck you’re talking about or you meant to say mma. To place him in the category of just actor is pure hate. He just has never competed mma

MJW is the 21st century's main bullshido guru even when he's right
Accept for the fact he is highly trained in multiple martial arts and just isn’t a professional fighter or id that part too difficult to comprehend so you make up a lie

Yuki Nakai fought that final half blind

I mean Ken shamrock and Dan Severn were mma legends even after to losing to Royce. Many of the guys outweighed Royce by a lot. Where were the guys who were not picked? Did they ever compete in mma?
Hm? The Gracies could have went to Japan to fight. Ken Shamrock was hardly signed for UFC 1 because people thought he was the best wrestler.

Rickson was also not 100% and had to fight 3 guys in the same night under the same rules.

and Rickson deliberately tried not to take advantage of Nakai's injury.
