I was reading The Book of Five Rings and then some info about Musashi himself. What I found interesting is that it is said, according to wikipedia, that he died at the age of 60-61, presumably of lung cancer. But the thing is, there's no credible source for that. I did a google search and there are results that say lung cancer, throat cancer, even stomach cancer??? But again, the sources don't seem credible enough to me.

So, can anyone into Musashi and eastern philosophy shed some light on this? Is there some more legitimate source about his cause of death, how did they presume that he died of lung cancer?

It's also really weird that someone like Musashi, judging by his lifestyle and the time period and place in which he lived, to die so early and by illness like that. I mean, obviously cancer is not new, but it still sounds kinda odd.

Reminds me of that old popular saying.

Live by the sword die by the lung cancer.

Maybe he choked to death on a penis and they didn't want to say that.

They didn't know what lung cancer looked like back then. He probably just got old, started coughing, then died.

It could have just as easily been tuberculosis.

Or hell, it could have been pneumonia. It's not like they had great medicine and 61 was pretty darn old for the time.

Maybe he burned a lot of villages, then started coughing up blood a few years later. Then some historian and arm-chair physician concluded it was lung cancer?

his cause of death was he got sick and died. thats generally as best as an explanation as you'll get. its like trying to find out why alexander the great died. all we can do is make an educated guess.

Cancer also supposedly took the life of another big japanese figure from that period, Tokugawa Ieyasu himself. Stomach cancer, IIRC. Read it somewhere on the internet so it's definitely true.

He was a well known badass, so many pussies likely tried to poison him or whatevers in order to get an edge against him in battle.

I wonder if Musashi did himself in at the end.

  18. What's more impressive, Musashi being 60-0 in duels or Frank Dux's 329-0 record in World Heavyweight Full Contact Kumite?
