Most champions are champions because of decisions they make outside the ring (Anderson Silva turning to the Nog Bros.) and not because of decisions they make in the ring.

If Silva never hooked up with the Nogs, what would he have become? I think he would have been a guy who reached the top only to be quickly displaced, kicking around for years as one of the top guys, but not THE top guy. Like Rashad Evans. Does that mean if Rashad Evans had found the right tools/people he could have been where Silva is -- one of the most dominant champions and contender for GOAT?

Dan Henderson hadn't fought at MW for a long time when he fought Silva. Many people think that if he had taken a tune-up fight at MW (to get used to the weight cut again) he would have beaten Silva. If Dan had made more careful decisions, instead of fighting everything in his path, would he be one of the most dominant champions and GOAT contender? What is the desired zone between people who fight too recklessly and have lesser careers for it and people who are too careful and calculating with their opponents to really impress with their fighting spirit?

Fedor trained with high-level dutch kickboxers for Crocop, but shortly after stopped training with outside people. Fedor doesn't seem to be the type to fall into personal hubris, but maybe he was consumed by nationalist fervor? He was so certain combat sambo is all he needed to train? Not sure. He still went down like a great. The image of Fedor waiting patiently to start round 2 while Bigfoot gasped for air on his stool is the reason I cheered for Fedor all these years.

Anderson nearly murdered someone years ago when he was in Pride I believe. If he did, we never would have witnessed what we are witnessing today with him.

Good points TS.

It takes a lot to be at the top of the sport, much more then just physical talent. Generally live your life the right way, choosing camps, training, preparing mentally, etc., are all critical to success. Take a look at GSP. He is one of the smartest, most mentally prepared fighters in the sport (maybe every\). His approach is very scientific. Of course, being a great athlete and having a solid team help!

Silva was using his Noggin.

We never know the path we will end up taking until the time passes and we look back and see the many steps that lead you to where you are now. I wonder what would have happened if GSP was impressed with Matt Hughes' Performance?

dan henderson has never looked good at mw.

controversial win over busta
loss to misaki
loss to shields

lets not pretend he would have beaten anderson if he had a tuneup fight

Of couse t/s you're correct, 100% of what a fighter does outside the ring, effect them inside, both personally and professional...

for example fedor could still be a Great fighter, but his hearts not into it ... An I doubt very much it's in his nature to move from Russia and join an American gym.

Natural ability can make you good.

Coaching can make you good.

Combine both you get greatness.

All people are what they are because of the decisions they made in life
Mind blowing I know

Fedor trained with high-level dutch kickboxers for Crocop

True. The only time I saw Fedor throwing a high kick was, ironically, against CC.

TS is right success is 100% who you train with and never the effort and dedication you show in trainning.

I did 1 season of MT at Tristar.
I must have sick wrestling and jab now!

I was wondering about the trajectory of Rashad's career and how different it might have been if Jones left Jackson and Evans stayed with Jackson's MMA...

Jon is a lot less independent than Rashad. Jones seems to be a lot more reliant and even dependent upon Winklejohn, Jackson, etc. and I don't know how he would have adjusted if he were forced to move to another camp. Say Rashad pulled whatever cards he had and Greg sided with him and said Jones wasn't allowed to take the fight with Shogun and stay with Jackson's, so Jones moved camps or started his own like Rashad did with the Blackzilians. Do you think Jones still would have become such a dominant force at LHW? We'll never know, but it's interesting to speculate, and just as interesting to imagine if Rashad had stayed with Jackson's. I feel like part of Evans' recent decline (although it's been overstated, as he's still capable of beating very good fighters) is due to the switch in camps.
