Missouri carried out the first known US execution of an openly transgender person Tuesday when Amber McLaughlin, who was convicted of a 2003 murder and unsuccessfully sought clemency from the governor, was put to death by lethal injection.

Her crimes:
The two were previously in a relationship, but they had separated by the time of the killing and Guenther had received an order of protection against McLaughlin after she was arrested for burglarizing Guenther's home.

Several weeks later, while the order was in effect, McLaughlin waited for Guenther outside the victim's workplace, court records say. McLaughlin repeatedly stabbed and raped Guenther, prosecutors argued at trial, pointing in part to blood spatters in the parking lot and in Guenther's truck.

We know people who have been executed were innocent of the crime(s) they were sentenced to death for. The death penalty is also not a deterrent. Since it's an irreversible sentence once carried out, and we know mistakes will continue to be made with wrongful convictions, the death penalty should be abolished in every state.

This person admitted it. Still admits it. Just says they feel bad about it. Well now she can identify as dead.

They executed a murderer. I can't tell if the media is celebrating the progress, or trying to work an oppression angle in there.

"The first ever transgender...execution."

Really? Who gives a fuck if they were trans?

We know its not a deterrent? He's gonna rise from the dead and kill another woman? Nah its the ultimate deterrent.

No, but now we don’t have to pay as taxpayers for his generate reassignment surgeries and treatments. He raped this woman with a steak knife after stalking her for months and then led police to the body. The only miscarriage of justice here is that it took so long to do it.

Deterrence is stopping the crime from happening in the first place. They were not getting out even if there was no death penalty. There is no link between murder rates and the presence of the death penalty. It is not a deterrence to crime.

What is the rate of murdering rapists being alive after being executed?

So? Apparently throwing them in prison for life(which is a death sentence all the same, BTW) isn't much of a deterrent either. Should we get rid of prisons too?

Deterrence ain't the be all end all. Justice is.

"So what if the judge reduced his bail and killed a cop? It's like totally not the judges fault"
"How dare they slaughter a rapist murderer!!!! THE DEATH PENALTY IS NOT A DETERRENT"

It's pretty simple. The existence of the death penalty has led to innocent persons being executed for crimes they did not commit. It will continue to happen in the future. Getting "rid of prisons" is a laughable strawman.

And? A few innocent people who received LWOP have rotted and died in prison all the same. It will continue to happen in the future. What's the difference? Some innocent lives have unfortunately been snuffed out by the state, in one form or another. They're outliers, though. You don't just throw the whole system away, because of a few mistakes.

There is no magical perfect system.

This one isn’t innocent

Personally I'm against capital punishment, not because I think it's too cruel, but because I don't think it's a real punishment. Having to survive for 30 years in a high-security state prison is one hell of a punishment. You're forced to group up with a car (typically on a racial basis), carry a shiv everywhere you go and put in 'work' when required, i.e. be ready to stab and be stabbed when cars go to war. People from your car have to literally guard you when you're in the shower because you might get jumped. You have to wear your boots when you sleep at night because shit could go off at any time. Every day you've got time to reflect about how much you've fucked up to end up in that position.
