it looks like a number of countries are interested in mining helium 3 on the moon, such as america, russia, china and india.
i wouldn't be surprised if russia or china get there first they'll claim ownership of the whole satellite. i'm unsure as to ownership from a legal point of view, maybe someone here knows? although some people have bought moon land according to news reports, but how valid is this?

this looks like a perfect scenario for conflict between countries. we all know that china and russia won't wish to share anything with any other nation.
i imagine mining will more or less be done by robots, so there won't be a lot of people up there after things have been built and put into place.

as far as a war goes, strategic nuclear weapons could be used without fear of immediate fallout for the people of the earth?
maybe the moon will end up with various countries walling off their areas. just a continuation of life on earth on the moon?

The problem is that it costs so much to get whatever you mine back, that it outweighs the value of whatever you're mining.

Our moon and all other celestial bodies belong to the common heritage of mankind according to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty that was ratified by every country being discussed so far.

Came to say this. The moon, according to the treaty, belongs to all mankind.

    And according to: https://treaties.un.org/pages/ViewDetails.aspx?src=TREATY&mtdsg_no=XXIV-2&chapter=24&lang=en
the exploatation of the Moon is restricted. While the US is not a party to the treaty, the general consensus in the UN is such that the principles of the treaty are accepted as valid, and the rules that apply to the exploatation of the ocean floor are held to be valid in the case of lunar exploatation.
