Army's 'Captain America' dies by suicide after nearly a dozen combat tours

"Master Sgt. Andrew Christian Marckesano served six full tours in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne and the Ranger regiment and a half dozen more combat tours overseas. He rose to become a decorated Green Beret and a Silver Star recipient. He had just moved to Washington, D.C., to start a coveted job at the Pentagon. Two days after the Fourth of July on Monday night, after having dinner with his former battalion leader, Marckesano returned home from dinner in Old Town, Alexandria, and died by suicide in front of his wife. He had three small children and was still on active duty."

I know that I'm on the other side of the political fence than a lot of posters here but if you need to reach out and talk here's a great website.

Heck, you can PM me if you want to get something off your chest. No one knows the load we had to carry and a lot of my kinfolk look at me like I'm from a different planet when I try to explain it to them.

We protected our country and freedom across the globe. We stand alone together.

Terrible situation. No I've never seen combat, but I've delt with some tragic things on the line of duty (not ment to be a pissing contest) but I'm willing to listen to anyone who needs it, and never judge.

“Marckesano’s suicide was the 30th from this battalion. ”

I’m not sure how to fact check this, but holy shit!

Looks like he was a Dodgers fan. That might explain things.

Guess the Asian woman driving stereotype is true.

FORT HOOD, Texas - The family of Gregory Wedel-Morales, a former Fort Hood soldier missing for 10 months until his skeletal remains were discovered buried near the Texas Army base in June, are claiming he won't receive military honors at his funeral and are left with only questions pending further investigation into the case.

What do you guys think of this case?

For me, it bothers me that the Army couldn't bury him with honors.

@Strychnine
Suicide rate for American veterans is at about 24 a day. That is = to 8,760 a year.
What is interesting is that many of these individuals never deployed or saw combat.

PTSD isn't the only cause. Seperation from family and friends (even stateside), inability to cope with military life, relationship problems coupled with stress and the heavy drinking the military is known for....

We see it in the CG and it's not just the ones who are pulling bodies.

Didn't they call him a deserter before they found his remains?

Now someone has serious egg on their face, this coupled with female Specialist hopefully brings some outside heat on the higher ups.

He deserted, right?

Yes, he was marked as such and do understand that is standard Army procedure which I am not arguing. However, given the recent events discovered, maybe they should have given the family some closure an at least give the soldier a proper military burial. Any SGLI payout should be held until the autopsy and investigation are completed.
