Might make trip to Texas, what is Austin's No Gi/MMA scene like?

looks like posters above covered the unimportant stuff.

Now, make sure you go to Torchy's tacos at least once while you're there.

I'm not huge on Torchy's, even among the Tacos For White People places, I prefer Tacodeli or Fresa's.

Also, isn't Dan from Cali? I assume he has at least some acquired taste for tacos you can't order in english.

Also...Yes, there's an In-and-Out.

However, if you say out loud that you think it's the best burger place in town, and you're from California, we're legally allowed to shoot you.

hey guys thanks,
thanks for invite ens

I'm not Cray for ye old In-N-Out unless it is with an Asian Woman or two. I suppose Mexican can substitute! As for Taco's, I'll eat that ethnic taco if it is fairly clean and fresh, just throw some lime and verde sauce and good to go lol.

I practiced a poqito el espanol for a couple months in Puerto Rico so maybe that will help.

Anyway, never really been to Texas, and since one of few places with fairly strong economy was thinking I should check out some places.

So overall, Austin not a bad place to live? Still would like a little back n forth comparing it to other cities in Texas....

I actually did look at El Camino's yesterday....pretty expensive for some rough ones........sad

I had whattaburger in Austin. Was ok. Some of the craft beers were pretty damn good as well.

quality of gyms and instruction? gyms friendly to each other or hateful? Is there any local MMA events?

Anyone dabble in the Acting/Stunt/Background acting world down there?

What is Austin like in general for those that live there or have visited? What you like and dislike?

What are people's other favorite cities in Texas? If were going to take a trip to three cities, which would you choose and why?

Cheers

Austin is a kick ass town. Really the only place that I have grappled and have no complaints. Like the city, there is something for everyone. There are a lot of dudes who fall into the hipster overly bearded and too much gd hair category who rock the tights of which you speak, but I don't know how you are going to ever completely avoid that. Just part of the scene--stay on top and try to partner with someone else and/or make them want to wear a damn cup.

Houston is hot AF and too spread out. Cool city in a lot of ways, just a little big for me. Austin is a lot like a small town still, but I have been here over 20 years.

Dallas is like Houston but without the coast to me. If I went there I would train with Chris Brennan at Next Generation. His no gi seems like the best almost anywhere in the US and I really enjoy reading his social media. You should look into that if Dallas is an option.

All 3 cities have great women and food, and the training will be more than sufficient.

My brothers live in Round Rock, Round Rock donuts was amazing

They won New York Times best donut like 4 years in a row in the 90's if I remember correctly.

If someone likes Krispy Kreme more, you should try to accommodate their mental handicap, because their life is hard enough as it is.

Well said sir

So Dan, my wife is a grad from Texas and I went to Texas state about a 20 minute drive from Austin.

I love Austin and it's not as shitty as Portland. It's hotter than hell in Summer and the traffic is some of the worst shit you can imagine. I've never really trained there but I know there is a solid grappling scene in the city. But after a long training day you need to try these places to eat and drink.

If you go you need to get to dripping spring and eat a salt grass bbq original location. There is good bbq on every corner of the city. The Mexican food is pretty good, not as good as San Antonios but it's decent. You can go to torchys it's good but there are some good dives.

Huts is an old fashioned burger joint on sixth street. It's part of old Austin, the Austin I grew up in the early 90s, and the hipsters don't eat there as much but it's a good place. The dag burger is a beast with a side of onion rings. Talking about burgers, you can also go to Fran's or Dans. Good old Austin burgers. Fran and Dan were married then divorced so they separated their business and each kept one location. The food is pretty much exactly alike.

Mexican food you can go to Polvos, gueros, or any of those places on south first.

Kirby lane or magnolia for breakfast. Trudys for a chicken fried steak. Drink and have a good meal at casino el Camino on sixth street. So many places I love Austin and plan on moving back one of these days. I do miss old Austin though. Have fun in Austin. Don't melt in that central Texas heat.

If it's to hot you can go swim in the many swimming holes around the city. There is twin falls, you can go to Barton springs, it's cold as hell. You can go tubing in the San Marcos river or new braunfels you can hit the comal or Guadalupe. You can also go to schlitterbahn waterpark. If you do go to new braunfels go to Gruene.

When you get to Austin raise a god dammed shiner bock and thank the lord you finally arrived in Texas.

I actually spent the whole summer there with my brothers in Round Rock, I wanted to visit Paragon but I didn't have the time or money to drive from Round Rock to the South side during rush hour. I trained at what used to be Gracie Barra Round Rock under Shane Zeronigne (I definitely misspelled that). I think his gym is called true jiu-jitsu or something now

(Barton Springs and 6th street were amazing.. I just can only handle so many hipsters lol)

Hi everyone, thanks, seems like a pretty good scene and good place to live. Definitely thinking about coming to check it out.

Anyone know if any of gyms could use an instructor to maybe give the owner some time off or add classes to their schedule....not just No Gi, but MMA, Kickboxing, Advanced MMA Striking, and Self-defense/Russian Martial Arts?

Any leads much appreciated. Also, if anyone knows someone willing to rent a bedroom out to Ol Wolfie drop me a PM please. Sept 1st thinking strongly about it.

Truth is, looking at somewhere cool to coach and train, that I could also perhaps get back into doing stuntwork/acting. So Austin, and Albuquerque are the places I can think of where could do both my passions. Already lived in LA 7 yrs so looking for different, and since I am getting older, too much younger competition or the older guys are long time friends of the stunt coordinators so they get the jobs. (is there anyone out there that can give me an Albuquerque vs Austin debate?)

Now that I survived skull surgery, hopefully can get back to coaching and training like usual. Been a hell of a year and long waiting....

my parents moved to austin a year ago and I visited them awhile back. I was really surpised with how much I enjoyed the city. the one suggestion a newbie like me took and will pass along is to have the taco place that's right past security at the airport when leaving. forgot what it's called but some of the best tacos I've ever had, and I live in San Diego lol.

lol guys, I may eat tacos but I do not eat fast food. I am big boned damn it, and yes being unable lately to train often and being on Prednisone I gained some weight.

What gym in Portland are you training at that you think is 'Portland weird'? That doesn't mesh with my experience in the Portland grappling scene for the past 7+ years AT ALL. Even the Portland 10th Planet guys are basically cool as shit.

But by all means, take your super secret submissions to Austin. Portland grappling likely didn't realize you arrived and won't notice you left.

Are they, are they cool as shit, like as cool and awesome as your post? Or just basically cool as shit? What are the exceptions to their coolness that makes them just basically cool? I didn't say some of those guys are not cool, I said I do not feel their attire is appropriate or funny. I am sorry if I offended your preference for my little ponies pajamas and the need to wear those around other men u want to hump with no cup on. There are other old school NHB MMA guys that feel that shit is wack too.

Alan, it's ok if you like my lil ponies, and think I am one sexy bear, but you don't need to bring that into the gym. Was my post not sensitive enough to your lifestyle choices? I am so sorry that PC lib media makes you think you are awesome. Perhaps you should Take your rubber legs and go back to whatever Stan or bania you came from....but then again, if my slightly un-pc I don't like tighty ass pants on dude w no cup on grappling other dudes especially if their weird kids/woman's pajamas offends you. I am sure they will be much more welcoming to your ways, they are very open minded and like weird there right?

Funny, some really top guys here have liked some of my super secret submissions, hell a couple black belts even helped figure out how we can use one usually done in sidemount that u can use in half guard to flow into another submission that is pretty damn legit.

Perhaps good Sir, since Keep Austin Weird is a saying, as is Keep Portland Weird, I wanted a comparison of the two. U did not need to get riled up Nancy. So unless you have actual knowledge of Ausin, why don't u stop being a troll and let the thread get back on track. Thx

Guys, real serious question since I still need some meds refilled and follow ups w medical.......

How is the low/no income medical situation in Texas and how has that been effected by obama care? I will try to look it up, but since Obama care a lot is hard to figure out. I thought my insurance in Oregon was gone, based on emails I got at end of last year. Well finally called and got through after 90 min wait when I called from Puerto Rico to make sure I still had it here so here is where I ended up having surgery. They said they got 60,000 calls of people worried they got cancelled mid year as well, and everyone confused, and system changes so no one knows anyones exact cancellation date/renewal needed date etc. Anyway, how hard to get some health care in Texas if no job so I can finish up some of my medical stuff until get back on my feet I hope?

Is there some program I could get quick, or would have to wait until obama enrollement next January? Some states must still have low/no income programs outside ObamaCare....as I did still have care here in Oregon, obama gov emails just made people think big gov cancelled out state programs................

I am still obviously hurting and recovering, so understand reaching out for some info. thnx

Also, how bad are most peoples allergies there? My sinus pressure has been horrible, esp in Oregon as our many peoples, but I did not know what was allergies/constant sinusitus and what was pressure from tumer and access spinal fluid etc.

Hey, if I come, you can all take me out to your favorite gym for No Gi and then to a foodie place of your choice to show me around and Ill get dinner. Anyone want a grappling/mma nerd for a roomate? I am really not half as bad as haters force me to sound on the net.

I hear Albuquerque is where all the movies are filmed currently. Tax credits and such.
