It just occurred to me, the way that Chandler fought and lost to Poirier was brilliant. He set himself up for the biggest pay day ever, he never would have gotten the McGregor fight if he won.

By putting on a exciting fight with Poirier and losing, he set himself up for a potential 5 million dollar payday with McGregor, vs a harder fight against Islam, where he'd probably make 250K.

It's kinda funny, but losing to Poirier probably setup the best fight he could have ever asked for, easier opponent with a insanely better payday.

It's interesting but there can actually be situations where losing is better for your career.

Yes it was brilliant master class on losing to get what he wanted. He sure did a good job of convincingly throwing... I'll have to check in with James Krause if he was helping him look that good.

That is what islam said last week, you didn't come up with it

There is a kernel of truth to what you are saying, but this route certainly can't work for everyone. There is only one Conor, and only so many fights with him. Once he is gone, no more red panty nights. It was obvious from the start what Chandler's game was - to please Uncle Fester and be a good boy. That means keeping it standing and throwing hands, even if that isn't the best plan for the individual.

That's assuming that Chandler would have been given a titleshot with a win

If Chandler fought smarter he would be ufc champ right now. He can beat anyone on the right night.

He would’ve got the fight even if he won though

Don't think so, he'd look like too much of a threat to McGregor if he beat Poirier, UFC really wants McGregor in a winnable fight. The way Chandler loses with his aggression and blaze of glory, UFC is betting that McGregor will win.

The biggest fight UFC can make is a McGregor title fight, they are trying to get McGregor easy wins to justify a title shot.

He didn’t purposely lose, let’s be clear. But his overall strategy (being thrilling but vulnerable) is absolutely what earned him this fight.

Probably, doubt he'd get McGregor though with a win. UFC wants someone they are convinced that McGregor can beat, Chandler doesn't look like a good candidate if he beats Poirier.

Yes he didn't purposefully lose, and agreed his thrilling/reckless style got him this fight, but he did have to lose in spectacular fashion to get this fight. He doesn't get this fight with a spectacular win.

I don’t think Poirier finding a choke in the 3rd has much to do with this. This fight isn’t getting to that point so what difference does it make. Chandler is a go-for-broke fighter who is a guaranteed show. That’s what got him this fight.

Even if Chandler won he still would’ve been winnable. He’s tailor made for Conor’s style. Chandler was also beating Dustin’s ass for most of the fight and almost knocked him out

They’ll give Conor anyone who isn’t a heavy grappler like Dariush or Islam unless it’s a title shot. They also want the other fighter to be at least known among casuals.

I think Ferguson was really close to getting this fight. Had Chandler won vs. Poirier, they very well might have put him up against another big contender or for a title shot.

I do think he still could have gotten the McGregor fight, but I think his chances go down with a win, while they go up with a loss.

I hope Chandler and his family get to enjoy his hard earned red pantie money before the CTE sets in.

And what? Dustin wouldn't have looked like a threat? He's butchered him two times in a row.

If I was Conor and the UFC, I'd be picking a chinny, short guy with bad striking and not the best cardio over Dustin anyday.

I agree Conor is likely a shell of his former self but people are thinking he’s more washed then he is. He’s only lost to Dustin in the last 5 years, before that his only loss was Khabib. Since becoming double champ he’s only lost to 2 fighters who are elite, one who is considered the goat. You can also argue ring rust affected him
