Does anyone employ any Psychological techniques to improve their sporting performance? if so what do you do? and how often?

Positive visualization, everyday, with increasing regularity as a fight approaches. Visualize yourself boxing/grappling/fighting a perfect fight, slipping and countering seamlessly, with flowing defense, having your opponent hurt and fighting on his back foot. Imagine the walk to the ring/cage/whatever, the stare down, all of it, and when the time finally comes for the fight to happen, it will feel like you've been there before and are just reliving the experience.

I like to remind myself that my identity is not as a fighter, and that the ppl i care about will not lose respect for me even if I lose. I don't even think in terms of winning and losing, I think perform or fail my self. It eases me up. Plus like KK said, realizing that there are much worse things than losing a fight.

Having a good pad holder and training with people you respect (who relish in beating on you when training for a fight....in a good way ofcourse) are all I have ever needed.

You develop comradory and push each other to the max mentally and physically

Train like you fight. we spar 90-100%. no breaks. you get mounted, youre gonna get beat on til you get out of it, for example. Spar with agression. if you go easy on eachother, you're cheating yourselves. when youve taken and given beatings to bigger stronger guys in training, you have confidence.

I used to meditate quite often (I've gotten out of the habit lately). There are many types of meditation, but the goal is generally to regain focus on the present moment. By training the mind to focus less on the countless random thoughts and emotions swirling around in it, and more on what's actually going on in front of you, your life is greatly enhanced, including athletics. This doesn't mean that "thinking/strategizing" is bad while fighting, but it just makes you more in tune with what's going on, increasing your instincts, reaction time, confidence, etc.
