*In honor of Memorial Day Weekend, here is a "memory" from the past
In 1986, I was competing in a powerlifting competition in the state of Washington as a member of the Armed Forces Powerlifting team. The event was held in a large athletic facility of the campus of a college (cant recall which college) I was neck and neck with another competitor and it came down to my last deadlift. If I could pull ( I think it was 650) I would win and if I failed, I was in second place. I was tired from the flight and from cutting weight. I went out onto the platform in a rage, which is something I seldom do and after numerous grunts and groans, pulled the bar to completion. I walked off the stage and was congratulated by my team mates and other competitors and I walked back to the warm-up area. As I was getting my warm-up suit on, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around and there were two gorgeous teenage girls standing there-they were probably 14 or 15 years old. When I turned around, one of them handed me her meet program and a pen and said "Can I please have your autograph" You could of heard a pin drop in that warm-up room. There were guys in there who had won world championships and this gal singled "me" out for an autograph. As I signed my name, I could feel my head swelling and of course I smugly looked around the room to make sure everyone was watching ( they were) I handed the program back to the young lady, and they thanked me and turned around and left-still dead silence in the warm-up room as everyone watched them leave.
As they rounded the corner, we could all hear them giggling and one said to the other " See, I told you he could write his own name" The laughter from the room that followed that comment was deafening and my swollen head was immediately deflated.
