They didn't go that hard for Mendes. Oh that's right, they were worried a wrestler might end derail the train. But since Nate wasn't a wrestler, they thought he'd play into Conor's strengths. So to try to humiliate him before the fight they send him on bullshit money shows with Conor knowing damn well Nate isn't the wittiest guy. 189 before Mendes stepped in had about 50 pressers because of that world tour, how many pressers does Conor have to do? That card was already sold regardless of opponent change Conor was fighting for a belt.

Nate and Conor at 196? 196 had only had 1 presser at the point of Nate stepping in (unlike 189), no belt was on the line so it has to be sold as a grudge match in order for it to generate interest as a main event which cannot be done in 1 press confrence on the Wednesday before the fight.
