Shocking stuff at the time.
Build up video by HBO is fantastic. Mayorga was a fucking nut.
Yes he was
I remember some people cried robbery 2nd fight. Wannabe boxing know it alls who thought it would be inconceivable for Mayorga too win a decision vs the boxer in Forrest.
Forrest wasn't landing anything in 2/3 of the rounds. It wasn't cute or conventional but Mayorga was able too pound away and on my card i had him winning 7 rounds if not 8
Mayorgas loss too Spinks was thanks too a referee who decided too interject himself and help Spinks.
Shame. Mayorga then went up in weight too chase some big paydays. He was a problem for anyone at 147.
Mayorga was crude, powerful and tough as nails. It’s too bad he spent the majority of his career undertraining and clowning for paydays.
I liked Forrest a lot, but he simply didn’t know how to handle a young and focused Ricardo.
I met Ricardo Mayorga at a small local show in Miami February 8th, 2008. At the time he was coming off that win over Fernando Vargas so he was riding a pretty nice wave. He was great to his fans. He got a lot of love and he showed it back. I got a picture with him. But man, towards the end of the event he was soooooo drunk. He was hammered! I remember after the event I saw him at the restaurant in the casino and he couldn’t even walk. The people he was there with had to carry him out on their shoulders lol. What a mess. I remember a few months later when the Shane Mosley fight got announced I thought to myself, with the way he’s living there’s no way in hell he’s gonna win. I love Mayorga though. Can’t help but wonder how much better he could’ve done if he lived healthier and trained harder. I remember me and the friends I went to that show with were all super excited about that Mosley fight because we had gotten to hang out with him for a couple minutes
