Around the 3:30 mark.

Not sure if anyone has posted this. Has some pretty good insight on MMA scoring and some of the flaws.

I was just reading about the Schaub Arlovski fight and remembered this video. It sucks for fighters at how inconsistent the scoring system is, and how careers can be affected negatively.

Just another reason why a fighters record doesn't tell the whole story.

Good watch. I like Hume's thinking.

Im inclined to agree with that logic however I still remain pessimistic about the chances of commissions running a 'non 10 point system judging' to be able to evaluate the 'new' criteria consistently. So I think for the most part we'll still be stuck in the same situation of judging criteria not being consistent.

Hopefully im wrong though.

Totally agree. It's ridiculous.

Beat an opponent handily --> 10-9
Barely beat an opponent or even barely lose to an opponent in a close round --> 10-9

That is a problem with how the ten point must system is implemented in MMA and is not inherent in the system itself. MMA scoring is essentially that round winner gets 1 and the loser gets 0.

The 10 point must system was adopted from boxing when Zuffa/The UFC were trying to separate themselves from the image of the whole "anything goes" "no holds-barred" era of guys punching each other in the dick, hair pulling, head butting, soccer kicking, head stomping, Gary Goodridge crucifix elbowing awesomeness.

And this is what we're left with. Obviously it's better than nothing, but some of these rules could definitely change for the better. Seeing guys play the grounded opponent rule with a hand or knee on the ground to avoid knees/kicks, Jon Jones with his fingers in your face, the 10 point must system favouring takedowns/being on top to damage is just awful.

Problem is this is a sport, and not a fight. Fighting doesn't have rules, time limits or scores. As much as some of you fans want to claim it as such, in the end it's the sport of martial arts and makes the most sense that a bout gets scored.

How you want to score/judge it is up for debate, but it's not as simple as "just pick a winner", there has to be criteria. The 10-9 must system would be totally fine, if the judges were educated enough about what they were seeing.

The 10pt must system isn't the problem (by itself). It's that the judges are so reluctant to use 10-10, 10-8 and 10-7 when scoring rounds.

10-10 is very rare and you have to nearly end the fight to get a 10-8 which is not what the score is meant to cover. 10-8 is when 1 fighter clearly wins the round - not necessarily is on the brink of ending the fight. 10-7 should be used in place of when we get to see 10-8 these days.

With a little broader range of possible scores we'd get better cumulative judging.
