Everyone thought Hughes was boring but he finished guys and his style set up for some really exciting fights throughout his career

Lots of my favorite fights of all time had Hughes in it. Hughes vs Newton, Hughes vs Trigg 2, Hughes vs Penn, Hughes vs. Gracie, Hughes vs GSP, Hughes vs GSP 2, Hughes vs BJ 2.

People definitely said he was an asshole. Nobody ever said he was boring. His fights were always fun win or lose.

One of my favorites was Hughes vs Joe Riggs. Joe Riggs had a lot of hype at the time, and talked all sorts of shit in the promo. He was so confident he was going to get after it, and he basically said he was better than Hughes everywhere. Then this happened....

Nothing against Joe Riggs, but after that fight, I always rooted against him until he came back as a veteran.

And Riggs missed weight for this fight, so it wasn't counted as a title defense for Hughes.

Not only did Matt have to wear all of Rigg's shit talking, but he didn't even get an official notch on his belt taking Riggs out as easily as he did.

The only fight I ever saw him that was boring was against Charuto. Hughes had a few really exciting fights with Trigg.

Hughes is widely considered the 2nd best UFC WW of all time. Unless you think he is better than GSP he is rated exactly where he should be.

When somebody wins a title and defends it a couple times, all of a sudden he is better than the retired legends.
There are no more Woodley>Hughes talks though. Usman does have the potential to be the greatest WW, but it’s too early now.

Hughes is insanely underrated.

probably because he was an epic douchebag, bully, animal abuser, child molester & sexual predator
... (and according to Sean McCorkle: Hughes seems to have bragged about raping his own wife in his book)


But he was the king of WW from about 2000-2006 or so, had tons of title defenses and had a crazy record of about 41-4 or so before he got old and lost some fights to highly ranked young bucks.
