Nobody 'needs' congratulations, but sometimes spectators feel the need to give some positive feedback to virtuoso performances anyways. I would probably have just grinned, shook the guy's hand, and asked him if he wouldn't mind sparring, but for those who aren't grappling-inclined, giving him some verbal props is fine too. The journalist seemed like an ex high-school wrestler or something (given his mention of suplays and collegiate wrestling), so I think he was pretty impressed and just felt like giving Swain his due respect for the skill she was showing.
