IMO Duran is the gureatest boxer we have enough footage of in his purime (so not counting SRR, Armstrong, Ezzard, Greb, Langford). Good to see one of my fave MMA fighters pay respect to one of my fave boxers, not surprising a latino with a streetfighting background would have that opinion of El Cholo

I see where he gets that bravado from. Nice inspiration. But Duran was not the greatest. All time legend? Yes. But far from the greatest.

Hes definitely not far. Pretty much every boxing historian has him comfortably in the top 10 P4P and vast majority have him as the GOAT LW of alltime (and many have him top 5 P4P as well)

Find me any list where he is not in the top 10

He's in most people's top 10 (and likely deserves to be there), but there really isn't much of an argument for him being #1. He only fought around 10 fights on the world level, and his four marquee wins (Louis, Charles, Walcott, and Moore) were over fighters who were either past it or being pulled up in weight (or both). That's not to say that Marciano wasn't a damn good fighter, but his resume isn't anywhere near good enough to be called #1 all time (a lot of that had to do with Marciano's relatively late start in boxing, and crippling back problems which led to an early retirement).

is that Tunney in ur avy?

oh cool, couldnt see the text clearly. Didnt know u were a fan

Yeah, I've always really liked the style (contrary to what a lot of people think, I think it's a style which would translate just fine in later eras). The relatively extensive footage we have of Tunney shows just how great a fighter Greb must have been.

That doesn't prove that he wasn't the best ever though. He may have been the best ever without the proper competition.

You're right, but he said greatest, not best, and greatest always implies resume playing a fairly major role in the ranking. Marciano is a bit like Tyson in the sense that he has a lot of people who strongly underrate or overrate him as a fighter (he invites strong opinions one way or the other). Still, I really don't think you'd find many people who would seriously argue he's the best HW of all time. He had tremendous physical abilities and heart (massive power in both hands, great stamina, and great durability), but he was far from a technical marvel, and in a better era (Marciano's era was weaker than the often criticized era of Tyson's reign), his small size and technical shortcomings would have likely been exploited. Still, not an easy fight for just about anyone, but I can't see calling him the best of all time (or even really being in the top 5).
