If you do a squat with the bar and nothing else, and work until your form is good, then you should be fine. Did he even offer to show you how it was done?

Perhaps it is, but since the technique is not something beginners or even novices can pick up quickly, OHP is a good way to immediately start working your shoulders.

Well, At first I showed him my technique. He then told me that I need to work on lower back and flip flexibility because I wasn't sticking my butt out enough and when I tried to stick it out more my knees started to move in an outward motion. Not sure which muscle group he mentioned. He then proceeded to recommend the DB.
After helping me out he showed some stretches to work on to help. He seemed knowledgeable and a nice guy. And looked the part. But like I said he is there to make money too.
