ok, first, this question also includes cardio so sorry about that since this isn't the cardio forum. anyway, I've been trying for a while to put together a good workout program that will help me build strength and power and also some good form of cardio to give me lots of cardio endurance, now I'm going into the marines in about 8 months. should I just use what I learn there? I mean, they seem to be in pretty good shape for that kind of stuff. thanx for any help.

P.S. I went to the marines website and they also cover alot about nutrition, should I also follow the kind of diet I learn there as well. thanx.

Royal Marines will give you everything you could possibly desire in terms of cardio and strength, and then some - nothing like pushing telegraph poles up hills with just your legs to get you fit. I know a guy who's an officer and he's now built out of some kind of mobile form of marble, and I used to get training tips from another former commando, and his aspect was savage.

If it's the US Marines; well, I couldn't possibly comment. But I'm sure there's plenty who can.

I wonder if you might do better in conditioning forum since really I would think that a marine is more interested in things that better suit marine life then say anything strength and power could offer. After all, I'm all about functional strength and trying to be beastly strong, but is that really going to help someone who for the most part needs serious endurance and probably rarely needs above average strength. I could be completely wrong about that though.

Start running. You will be running everyday so you should get used to it now. Make sure you work on situps and pullups because these are the exercises you will be tested on. In the gym do a basic push-pull-squat workout. Keep it simple and just work on strength.

Check out the Navy Seal Workout post in the conditioning forum. That's the type of stuff you'll do in boot camp, and if you can get to the level of that programyou'll be fine. Focus on endurance a lot. You'll run ALL the time, do thousands of pushups and spend a ton of time in modified pushup positions (building the house). No matter hoe good of shape you're in, there are times you'll get thrashed beyond exhaustion, but the better considtion you're in the better.

oh, one more question. what program do you guys think is better, royce gracie's superfit or bas rutten's mma workout? or neither? I'm mostly trying to build strength, speed, stamina and flexibility. I'm also trying to lose alot of fat but I guess that's mostly done with diet and I know what diet I'm gonna follow already (BTW, I read superfit already and the diet is really not that great and I don't know if bas rutten's workout covers diet). Thanx for any help.

Ive never done either of those programs but I know alot of people here say Bas's routine is good. If your looking for a program to follow IMO take Stewies advise and check out the seal workout.

Getting in shape is important but ya know what ,if your a fat fuck they put you in the PCP platoon right away (Physical Conditioning Platoon, known around Paris Island as the Pork Chop Platoon) until you get into good enough shape to roll with the regular platoons. One of the odd side effects of this is that you get a sort of pre-boot camp boot camp which enables you to be a leader right away when hooked up to a regular platoon cause your pretty much over the shock of Paris Island.

One thing i'd say to work on before going in is closing your left eye if your right handed and vice/versa...eye/face muscles can be worked isometrically to help with this...this is critical to do with ease for shooting purposes...and enjoy your civillian time since you will be in a war situation sooner or later...

I checked out that seals workout and almost everyone on that thread was saying it wouldn't be good for an mma fighter and that's the shape I wanna get into, shape for mma fighting. because that's what I want to do, when I get outta the marines I wanna fight in mma. plus, the marines focus on stamina/endurance AND strength (I guess mostly for hand-to-hand combat).

First get in shape for boot camp. After thats done you can work on mma. Boot camp is very tough, but I know some guys who were in such good shape they cruised though it. If you go in in top shape you can make squad leader or honor man or some shit like that. Worry about fighting later.

As far as the marines focusing on strength, I beg to differ. Most of my buddies have come back from boot camp skinny and weak. And the hand to hand combat isnt very intensive.

You need to focus on conditioning now strength later. Work on running, pushups, pullups, situps, dips and i would do bodyweight squats if I were you.

Superfit looked like shit. You can find much better programs on this board.

The Marine Basic Training is more concerned with muscular endurance as opposed to raw power and strength.

Good suggestion excellent site, but he will need to do a lil more running then they suggest

ok, yeah, I'm going to get into shape for boot camp first, but after I'm outta the marines (when I wanna fight in mma) what will I need to work on? just strength? thanx.

Limit strenth, muscular endurance (see Gotchs bible challenge thread), and sprinting.

a couple quick questions. question. to get in shape for boot camp, would it be a good workout to do the bas rutten workout 5 days a week, with H.I.I.T. cardio 3 days a week and long runs 2 days a week? or maybe a workout from bodyweighttraining.org with H.I.I.T. cardio 3 days a week andf long runs 2 days a week? should I be lifting weights or no? thanx alot.
